When I was a ute there were stories about there being no speed limit in Texas. Here, over 100mph is a misdemeanor and you can be arrested. Doesn't stop people from doing it.

There is very little amateur racing these days due to insurance issues. The local PCA puts on track days where you take your car and drive as fast as you dare after getting some intro instruction and a green/blue/black type rating. No racing is allowed, but passing is if waived by by the car in front and then only on certain track segments. To get around the insurance issues, they call them "driver education days."

I have not done it in my own cars, but enjoy flailing around in other people's cars. It's a really expensive hobby when you add up tires ($1,500/set), oil changes ($200 per), maintenance, and potential damage repair (not if but when). I have too many other expensive hobbies/indulgences and never needed to add that one.

The car I was driving at COTA was an AMG GT-R, something well beyond my realm of foolish spending. The AMG that I bought and that got me the ticket to the track was a 2019 C63S sedan. It sat in the parking lot while I drove MB's cars.

We do have speed limits throughout the state. Some west of here are 85, which is the highest. Most of the highways around here are 70, including the state highway that runs through out town. Cops will ticket you as it is a great revenue stream for the cities and states. But, you can get away with a lot. I once made it to Houston early on a Saturday morning, 240 miles, in 2.5 hours. My wife napped the whole way, and then woke to ask if it was her turn to drive as I pulled into her parents drive.

When I first got the Challenger, I thought of doing at least some performance driving instruction/track day sort of thing, but the expense of it was what turned me off. Plus they said to essentially cover the bottom half of your car in AT LEAST blue painters tape, and yeah, tires, extra wheels to mount those tires on, better brake pads, maybe better brake rotors, since the Challenger is about 2 tons of car, which is a lot to keep slowing down with non-ventilated discs.....

Obviously, I didn't so much think OF doing it. More thought ABOUT doing it - essentially fantasizing, rather than thinking of actually doing it.

My last Porsche had carbon/ceramic brakes. I loved them because they put out no brake dust and they stopped the car on a dime. Putting them on a track meant replacing them about every 2 or 3 track days at $20k/set for rotors (I kid you not). Most people with them change them out for iron rotors on track days, but that is just way too much effort and expense for me.

I never gave the track thing much thought either. Still like driving the cars though!

I like to keep them nice and shiny as well, and cover the front ends with PPF (a better painter's tape). Has really paid off in reduced damage and wear over the years.

A guy I used to ride with, and met through the forum, btw, raced road motorcycles on tracks around SoCal. He said he spent about $1k per month on tires and about $20k total per year on the thing. He rode bicycles to stay in shape for motorcycles. He eventually gave up on the moto racing, just took too much of his money.

It looked clear, and who appeared to be his wife was with him.

And wives are God's way of telling you not to spend it. ;)

I could never justify the cost.

I can justify the cost of owning the cars because the cost to own is not that great if you can get past the initial purchase price. If you choose wisely and take care of them, they don't usually depreciate too much. As an example, I bought a 2015 Cayman GTS that was 8 months old with 5,000 miles on it. It was CPO'd by the dealer which gave it a warranty good for 5 years and 2 months from the date of my purchase. It stickered at $120k new, and I paid $89k. I kept it for 4 years and sold it for $74k. An Accord loses close to the same amount in 4 years.

I've really become a fan of the AMG stuff. Back in the day, I was never impressed, but those definitely make me stop and look when I see a good one go by. We get a few in here, tampered beyond belief, and rarely see them again. They're likely registered in another state after a visit with me.

I really enjoyed the one I had, and would get another. That twin turbo V8 would really shove you into your seat. It was a heavier car, but drove really light. When I had the opportunity to get the Taycan (which I had been lusting after since it was announced), I just had to jump on it knowing that the car supply would be drying up.

My wife now drives the loudest car in the family. Talk about turning the world upside down.
