Thanks for this Kurt. Turns out mine does have the washer behind the adjustment piece...I'll get it sorted. I don't think you need to switch to the other washers - I am just a bit neglectful and had the spindle rotate a few times on long rides.

The "5" spindle is simply a spindle for a 70mm Italian BB. If you can find an Italian BB spindle (provided they're not for something like Campagnolo thin cups), you should be in business. A Shimano 105/600 Italian BB spindle ought to be a good place to start. -Kurt |

When I bought my Rudge almost 4 years ago, it had some (1970's?) Regency (Japan) tires on it that served me well. The rear was fading away, though, and the rubber around the beads had crystalized, breaking off into flakes and chunks whenever I changed a tube. Those tires had a 7mm white stripe. The time had come for my Rudge to wear some new rubber, so it received N.O.S. Michelin Sport white-walls, made in Stoke-on-Trent, England. There is no p.s.i. recommendation on these tires, so I have them pumped-up to the same spec as my earlier tires, which is 50 p.s.i. I had to bring my rear axle a little forward in the dropout, because these tires were contacting inside the fender (they had appeared to be about the same profile as the Regencies). Not only are these Made in England, but there was even a small Halford's tag on the cellophane, which looked hand-wrapped in spirals around each tire. These were in New York state, and I don't know the story as to how they got there. The instructions specify the use of powdered chalk on the tube and rim-strip upon installation. As you may have noticed, the bike is minus a chain. Mine was stretched, so I have a Renold Elite on its way from Germany.

Here's the Sprite I picked up a few weeks ago ...but don't be alarmed!! This will become Sturmey Archer powered! I'm really digging this lovely metallic sky blue. So far I have swapped out the uncomfortable vinyl saddle it came with for this B72, traded in these 27 x 1&1/4" alloy wheels, and given it a longer alloy Sturmey Archer brand stem. And also changed the pedals, the originals were similar block pedals but in a much shorter length. The tyres are Michelin city protek that I had on these rims already. They're quite tall in profile so I had to do a fair bit of fiddling to get the wheel to sit well in the rear mudguard, including cutting the stays attachment bolt shorter and using a lower profile nut. They were hard work to get on the rim as well, but worth it because they're a cushy ride. The original steel rims have gumwalls in good condition still, but I thought the all black tyres looked better with the black seat tube band. The plan is to pop in an S5 hub. Later on I'll think about adding a chainguard and a prestube rack (not a fan of the alloy rack). And consider what to do with the cranks - maybe even find some classic herons head cranks. And I need to tilt that B72 back another notch or 2 before my next ride |

What with losing the saddle, the brutal headwinds, and the hills on US14, my planned 8 hr ride on the underpowered Ural took 10.5 hrs, but I got here. Time for some Advil and bed. |
