queerpunk 11-12-15 02:16 PM

So there's this gif.

https://pbs.twimg.com/tweet_video/CS0t5pnUcAA7Qci.mp4 The announcers said that since Hoogland went backwards so that he could take the lead, rather than to give up the lead, that the going-backwards wasn't labeled a violation.

I scanned the rulebook but couldn't find the rule about how you can only go forwards. Anybody what that rule states?

gtrob 11-12-15 02:38 PM

Is there not a rule for how long you can track stand? Or how many times? I thought in there it said something about rolling backwards. Or maybe thats one of the silly longest lap rules

*I quote UCI rules that I make up all the time*

queerpunk 11-12-15 04:20 PM

the trackstand rule is:

3.2.039 The rider on the inside of the track, unless overtaken, shall lead at least at walking
pace and make no manoeuvre to force his opponent through until reaching the
pursuit line on the opposite side of the track. A maximum of two standstills shall be
permitted for each race. The maximum period for a standstill shall be 30 seconds
following which, the leading rider shall be directed by the starter to continue. If he
fails to do so, the starter shall stop the race and declare the other rider the winner of
the heat. In a three or four-up race, the race shall be immediately rerun as a two or
three-up race, without the relegated rider.

There used to be a rule that limited how far a rider could "reverse" during a track stand. As I recall the distance was around 20 inches.

queerpunk 11-12-15 09:32 PM

yeah, but I can't find the rule!

It was 8 inches, or 20 cm. It was rule 3.2.040 which got eliminated January 1st, 2002. It stated that a rider was not allowed to pedal backwards to get behind an opponent. It also stated hopping of the bicycle to accomplish the same thing was illegal as well.

i found this pic from Revolution featuring a Giro helmet I hadn't seen before... like a new version of the air attack, with some of the styling of giro's new snub-tailed TT helmet that i had seen on world tour teams this year - but this one is roundbacked.

Tickets for Rio Olympic Track Events are on sale.
To purchase tickets for all the sessions would cost 2,550 to 3,000 Euros.

yikes, $400 for a medal round, although maybe that is normal. I remember gold medal hockey game in Vancouver (canada vs US) was going for around $700/seat.

even $200 for a 90min session non medal session..

The UCI is relaxing their saddle tilt rule: UCI changes rules governing saddle tilt and saddle length | Bicycle Retailer and Industry News

wens 12-04-15 06:17 AM

Awesome, that rule was such a poor implementation of trying not to allow a back stop on a saddle, and really hard to measure.

gtrob 12-04-15 11:52 AM

sweet lord my testicles rejoice

Im comfortable right around -5, especially in pursuit position. getting to sub -3 (with my new post its closer to -1 since its the stupid 3T topper) was really hurting on my new bike.

Not sure if I posted this before:

I saw this posted in my track's facebook group. I'd be interested to see how many people end up applying. I feel like they'd be hard pressed to even get 16.

Reminds me of that league that TTown had in the 90s(?). I forget what it was called. I wasn't into track racing then, but I've heard about it. Anybody got any info about that?

Olympian Bobby Lea suspended for doping violation - VeloNews.com

This news makes me very sad.

wens 12-18-15 06:23 AM

Me too. But also concerned, if popping percocet level drugs to sleep is normal in the sport, that seems like a problem. It seems to be the norm for pro cyclists though, all kinds of small mentions of sleeping pills scattered around, but I only know anecdotes and not reality.

queerpunk 12-18-15 07:59 AM

If prescription painkiller abuse was a problem in high-level cycling, then the problem that we would have would be one of narcotic addiction and abuse, not one of doping, cheating, or performance enhancement - and I think it's extremely foolish to try to address the former as if it were the latter.

carleton 12-18-15 01:21 PM

Wow.

I've had trouble sleeping at big events, most notably from racing hard on the first day and having to do the same on the second. Usually on the second day I'm at 85-90% mainly due to lack of good rest.

One racer told me to, "Drink a beer. It's probably enough alcohol to put you to sleep but not enough to affect you the next day."

gtrob 12-18-15 04:43 PM

Heartbreaking to hear. Ive raced with him a couple of times (we were on the track at the same time, not sure Id call it a race lol), always been a very approachable and easy going guy. Hopefully the US can send someone to Rio in his place, but Im not sure who that would be.

It looks like the full version of Cheetah: The Nelson Vails story is on youtube now

MarkWW 12-19-15 11:02 AM

Huh. It looks like the documentary used a few of my buddy's personal photos of vails from his website without his permission. That's pretty lame.

Yeah, that sucks.

A quick email with "Do you mind if I use these photos in particular...?" is probably all that the producer needed to do. But, alas...it didn't happen.

Apparently they're about €6000. My girlfriend's mother was talking about getting a table made with reclaimed wood, so naturally I'm pushing for them to get this...

i saw that a while back and got inspired - sweet-talked my track director into parting with some old wood. it's enough for a decent-sized endtable and i'm looking forward to doing something with it someday.
