Where to find Campy 9-speed middle chain ring
 

Any suggestion on where I can buy Campy 9-speed drive train components?

At the moment, I’m in urgent need of a 9-speed middle chain ring for a triple. But going forward, I will probably needing replacement cassette sooner or later

My bike, while older, is in good working order. But whenever I need replacement of ‘consumable’ parts, I’m finding it getting a little more difficult to find places I can buy those older 9-speed Campy components. So a reliable source for those parts would be greatly appreciate

I have had good luck with Ebay.

Like you I have a 9 speed driveline on my favorite bike and have laid in chains and cassettes to keep it going for the foreseeable future

Be advised this stuff may not be cheep. I think I paid 200 buck for a NOS Chorus 9 speed cassette in desirable ratio (13-26)

the middle ring may be hard to find as that part is unique to the triple crank.

Were you able to find new parts? Not just used ones?

Try Specialties TA chainrings. Probably as good as Campy and popular with the Campianisti gang. Triple (specialites-ta.com) Find the right one and shop around the net.

yes, NOS. what is the BCD (bolt circle diameter) of your crank ? 135 mm ? unless you want a 39t., that is going to be a hard part to find.

Yes, 135, 42t. As common as it comes

oh good, OK. the only problem is that a 42 T ring that is a middle ring should have ramps and pins.

that variation is hard to find.

If it is BCD 135 and 74, you want Specialities TA Vento rings for middle and outer, and Zelito for the granny. Be sure to specify middle, or you will not get the shifting aids to get up from the granny.

Vento middles are in stock in several sizes in the 39T to 42T range at TA in France and at a bunch of on-line retailers in the UK and Europe. There is also Peter White Cycles in the US. Even die-hard Campagnolo fans like TA rings. They work great and are beautifully made and finished. The Vento is made specifically for the Campagnolo 135 BCD 9 and 10 speed cranks.

I agree with other posters that TA rings will do it for you, that's what I use on my Shimano crank. But here are a couple of Campys:I have bought one time from this seller and it was a satisfactory transaction.

Stronglight also makes chainrings to fit Campagnolo cranks

Spa Cycles in the UK (spacycles.co. uk) has a thorough listing of TA and Stronglight chainrings. I cannot confirm availability of 135 BCD Stronglight middle rings (with shifting aids) there or at the Stronglight site. Stronglight might be a good choice for an outer ring for a Campy triple though. I have used the cheaper 6061 alloy 110 BCD Stronglight rings with good results. There are many brand choices for the 74 BCD granny.

IMHO though, Specialities TA has all the choice and quality you need. I think Peter White (peterwhitecycles.com) lists all the TA rings available, in perhaps a more logical fashion than the TA site does.

Is it easy to identify those “ramps” and “pins”, if one is given a random ring? (Assuming correct BCD and # of teeth)

Just out of curiosity.

Yes, See the picture I grabbed from sheldonbrown.com. It shows the inside faces of a few different styles of ramped and pinned rings. From the outside face you only see the pins. They look like nail heads at maybe six locations around the ring. The article at sheldonbrown.com (in the glossary sections) with the picture is accurate and concise. My only edit would be to mention that the middle ring of a triple should be ramped and pinned.

On some rings, some teeth near the ramps are noticably shorter, again to help shifting. They are not broken teeth, unless of course they are!

Got the TA ring!

The pins and ramps on the ring are not the same. So obviously it matters how to align the ring to the crank. There's an arrow on the TA ring. Is that suppose to point a certain way?

Or is there a certain pattern one can deduce from the pins and ramps as to which way to install the ring?

The engraved side of the ring (TA, Made in France) faces away from the frame. Congrats, have fun.

note the clocking of the rings on this crank. The "Specialites TA" should be on one side of the spider arm at 12 oclock

There’s a distinct arrow on the ring. I’m pretty sure it meant something. How should arrow point?

I believe the arrow would go opposite of the crankarm if it doesn't have a bolt directly under the arm or basically in line with the arm whether directly underneath it or opposite of it. Arrow facing outward.
