I read in another place recently that some CX racers put tent sealer on their sidewalls.

thoughts? information?

I just read yesterday that Dugasti coats one of their cotton sidewalls with a urethane sealant to protect it from water.

Mid-90s I commuted on synthetic tread Clement Paris Roubaix sewups. That was fun! I never rode the silk version but I did much of my racing on the Criteriums. Those synthetics might not have been quite as sweet but they weren't far off. And they just shrugged off Seattle winter wet. Then the tires got an armor belt under the tread and the price doubled. I grit my teeth and bought a pair. First week I killed one on construction debris. That was way too costly a flat for a commuter!

I'm now running Corsa G+ with cotton cord. I should look into that tent sealer as the Portland winter is approaching. And I just bough some Veloflex (for their currently hard to find 23c tires that are close to max for my Pro Miyata. But that bike won't see much rain as it's never wearing fenders.

So, tent sealer outside, Orange Seal inside. How could the air possibly escape? (That air molecule, a fish between two seals.)

I thought the tent sealer was to make the sidewalls easier clean after muddy CX races.

So wait, those Araya keirin rims are OK to use with rim brakes? I'm still hoping to run into a good wheelset locally over the winter but I might splurge on new in the end. Would look just right on the Made in Japan Bianchi.

There was a thread not to far back discussing current production Tubular Rims and I came to the conclusion that the specifications compared favorably to vintage tubular rims and were even more robust than Mavic 330 and 280. More like the GP4. And they look cool of course in a low profile non-machined brake track sort of way. You can't go wrong with the Ambrosios which I have abused on several mixed terrain rides. They look the part -- but they are not shiny.

Did they deduct the Italian tax? Pet peeve of mine. I recently tossed a cart I had going at Rose Bikes (Germany) when they wanted me to pay 19% VAT. Ordered the same stuff from Bike24 instead, tax-free without any hoops to jump through, just based on my US address. The rate is 22% in Italy :eek:

A Japanese Bianchi is crying out for the wheelset from a late-80s Panasonic Team Japan, which I'd been saving for a special build. Sansin gyromaster polished silver hubs with sealed bearings. DT spokes 28F, 32R. Rear is spaced 126mm with space for a 7-speed freewheel, if I recall correctly. Correct Sansin skewers. Araya Aero super hard anodized tubular rims. Brake tracks are clean. Really nice stuff.

My Sprinters arrived yesterday. Box was a little beat up here as well, but tire appeared to be fine, maybe just in the shop too long? Put them on my stretching rims and everything seems o.k. Maybe they just wanted to get rid of their sewup old stock.

I have found the best tire deals on 22/23mm tires - which are on only a bike or two and should migrate to 25/26

I want 24s. 25s don't fit on my Pro Miyata. (Do any of you know of a close reach brake that has more clearance underneath than a very close SunTour Cyclone? Brake bridge has a couple of mm to spare with 25s. Pads are pushed up all the way on the Cyclones. Rim fit is perfect but not a mm to spare.)

I"m running Conti 22c Giros on GEL330s now. Not a happy combo. To feel safe with those light rims, I don't feel confident with less than 100 psi. 100 psi is pretty bouncy on those not very "soft" tires. Trying to get some GP4s built u but they are newer, deeper ones and my 300/302 spokes that work beautifully on every other shallow rim don't here. (I want to go Veloflex Race 23c on the GP4s, Vitt Corsa SDpeed on the GEL 330s. Both should run just fine on that bike and be very happy tires at 100 psi and enough bigger that the end result should be pretty bullet-proof from a rim standpoint.)

My order was for 25mm Sprinter Gatorskins. Purchased one in June and I think I paid $54 and was pleased with that. Can't beat $17.95 for this one though.

Fwiw, these mount to GL330s and Reflex rims exastly at 25mm.

Well....many kudos and thanks for posting a too good to be true...but it was deal. Got some nice 25mm Conti. Sprinter Gatorskins today. Started the season on a tubi downer (flats) this more than made up for it!!

i'm about to take my first foray into the tubular world since i got a peugeot super competition with phil wood hubs and fiamme tubular rims. the current tires on there are pretty old clement "super condors." they do hold air so maybe i'll ride them for a bit, but generally like to ride wider tires so was looking and they're all quite expensive. The tires and rims measure about 20mm. What's the max width tire for a rim like that?

Was looking at Vittoria Pave CG at biketiresdirect which were on sale a few days ago for $61, but now they're on sale for $121! Open to any suggestions and will follow this thread to hopefully find a good sale. I'm generally more into the puncture resistant variety. Cheers.

I have a pair of Mavic aluminium rims , measure like 20mm widh and need to buy new tubulars for my restauration process of a PA10 from '75 . I am thinking to a pair of Veloflex ProTour , but don't know what to choose between 23 25 or 28 ? Any imput will be greatly appreciated. My experience with tubulars came from more than 15 years ago . I'm a fan of Continental Giro's , they are 22mm .
(Both rims I have are 20mm Mavic and a Faimme Ergal) . They are tan walls though the last pair I bought the wall was very light , seems to be getting darker with a little age . They accept over 145psi but now in my older years I run them around 75psi . Also they are repairable although I have never done so , they are inexpensive enough that I just carry a spare .

Thanks, i live in Europe and have limited possibilies where to search. Veloflex offer free shipping but if i buy from bike24 they are cheaper even with 15€ shipping cost. That's why i was taking into consideration Veloflex.

Aqua Seal is what you're looking for. Stu sells it at Cyclocross World or you can of course order it from the big A or a bunch of different outdoor places. I've used it a bunch, works great. Easy to keep tires clean and looking new.

I'm using Mavic Monthlery Route (21.5mm) rims, I've put Vittoria Rubino Pro G+ 28mm on them.
Works fine and they're 28mm at 75 psi, I've done about 1k miles on them (with Orange Seal in them).
In theory 28mm gives a softer ride on city streets.

Edit: I'm using Tufo tape, haven't tried glue yet (15 months on tubulars).

If you don't over-inflate them. 85 in that tire is about the same as 100 in a 23mm tire. I weigh about 165 and would inflated a 28 tubular between 60-70.
