Yeah, if he's riding like that, I'd suspect that he's gonna do the Omnium or maybe man3 in team sprint? Think about it. The amount of muscle he'd have to shed in order to race on the road like that doesn't jive with the amount of muscle you'd need to race sprints at the same level. He's 6'2" and 170lbs (1.9m and 77kilos). He was always slimmer than most sprinters. How does he compare to Hoogland? |
i don't think he can handle an omnium.
it's not like he's trying to hang on the front group during a climbing stage. he'd be okay in the grupetto. yes he's always been on the leaner side of sprinters. njisane, awang, and kenny are also fairly lean sprinters. i believe he beat hoogland at nationals (finals) also qualifying in 3rd for the 200m. i can understand the match sprint win since he has a ton of experience. he lost a few days ago at some 6 day event to hoogland. but taking the kilo too, now that's just raw horsepower (assuming they both have pretty decent start techniques) |
The crazy thing about his kilo is his first lap was only a 19.5!

The gruppetto is still riding 5+ w/kg up long climbs to make the time cut on a regular basis. It's easier than the front group, but not easy.

I had an excel spreadsheet I lost that had a bunch of tabs including a gear inch table, ability to plug in a chainring size and see speed be rpm for common cog sizes, have splits for 200m, 500m, 1000m for various speeds and cadence, etc. Anybody have a copy they would be willing to email me?

Well, I set it up so that you could change any of the variables and it recalculates. So, could reverse-engineer backwards from your time and see what your ramp-up probably was. If you really want a fun exercise: I've determined that there is a direct relationship between top speed and flying 200M time at TTown (within 0.1s). I've tested it with multiple riders and the results are very good. Edit: So this means, if a rider can record his/her top speed during a flying 200M, I can tell them what the resulting 200M time would be +/- 0.1s. |

TC The Casco Warp is too hot to wear on the road. The documentation says "for events 1KM or less". I seriously would not consider using it for anything other than short track events. Pointy helmets seem to be faster than round ones based on what I see top teams using. The only time they use round helmets is for short events when they cannot use pointy ones (like match sprints or keirin) |
^not exactly. in match sprints and keirin, various short-tailed and k-tail helmets are allowed - the lazer wasp air is mass-start legal, the kask bambino is VERY popular in sprints and keirins.
aerodynamics can surprise the eye so it's hard to go with rules of thumb. but if you had to go for a rule of thumb beyond "it depends," it's perhaps that a pointy or k-tail helmet has aerodynamic benefit if the head is sticking up a little bit; a round one has benefit (especially with a visor) if the head is at or below the shoulders. |
