Can you resist a bargain?
 

I have some kind of disease or sickness. At best it's a strong addiction. I've been into cycling a scant 3 years and I own 12 bikes. I just bought 2 more last week that were super bargains with 9 speed Deore group sets at $100 each. I am currently trying to buy one that just showed up locally for $150. It's a Reynolds 853 Lemond. The thing is that I don't need it. I already have an 853 Lemond in better shape but man, it's only $150. Do I need psychiatric help? I do ride all my bikes fairly often with the exception of 2 that I stripped for parts.

You are asking a group of enablers. Of course you don't have an issue! It makes complete sense. I just bought my 7th wheel set for my 2 vintage bikes. $50 for Campy record hubs and wheels (with the quick releases). I created a reason why I needed the 7th set. It made sense to me at the time. It would have been rude to not buy them. I hate being rude. So I'm riding them this week.

You're coming along just fine, in my first 3 years of jumping back in, I probably had at least 25 including several spendy ones that I had always wanted.

Now, it's truly out of hand as it should be, so many bikes, so little time.

I do have many of the ones I always wanted so I have pumped the brakes a tiny bit but still far from done.

I do need to ride more of them more often but as I commute, I get one set up just right and stick with it for the long haul.

Here's the current ride for about 3 years now, fits like a glove and works so well, can't bring myself to get another going for this, the bar is high.

But I did recently pick up three Peugeots, including a 1972 PX10, for $300 total. Seemed like a damn good bargain to me.

Exactly, "need" is relative, if there's any question, you "need" to escalate your justification game. ;)

As of late I have passed on a lot of bargains and have been considering selling off a lot of my bikes.....tired of rotation and only have been riding a few. Most likely keep the Paramounts, PX's and a few others including the Bertoni.
In the past I would drive to get stuff but now not so inclined...maybe getting bored.............

Joking aside, I am feeling over-bought at this point. I am trying to rid myself of the stuff I overbought for the bike giveaway and some "saves" that are too big (24-25") or too small for me (20-21"), try as I might...

I buy bikes I don't need and have no room to store all the time. The medical term for this condition is N+1 (N being the number of bikes that you already own and 1 the one you are about to buy). It is a common illness for many Bike Forum members and could even be thought to be contagious. Happy hunting!

A bargain? Heck, I can't even resist a moderately decent deal.

It happened one day when I needed a replacement rear derailleur. When I went on eBay, I discovered it wasn’t that easy to find that derailleur in the condition I wanted.

Today I probably have 8-10 of that same rear derailleur. If I see another excellent one at a good price, it’s just one more.

Same thing happened when I needed to replace a freehub body, I don’t have 8-10 of the same one, but I have at least a couple replacements for each hub.

A half dozen Onza 26” mtb tires, extra hubs, rims, shifters, chainrings; and the list goes on.

For me it is not about bargain bikes, it’s about bargain parts. I cannot possibly live long enough to wear out my stash of backups.

2 days ago I grabbed 2 bikes just because they were interesting AND they were free!

Retirement and a downsizing move are on the immediate horizon. Plus, I'm on the down-slope of my active years, so it's easy to pass up everything that cannot be sold. We're trying to rid ourselves of things, not accumulate them. I'm selling three of my actual riding bikes now, so...

In view of these factors, it's a lot easier to not be looking for bikes in the first place, and to pass on anything for which there isn't a direct re-sale opportunity. Just another phase of life, I guess.
