I suggest you sit it out. Those kinds of conditions will only make you soft! :p

With my father having a skin cancer scare last year, I'm taking the ferocious summer sun a lot more seriously this year and covering up as much as I can (especially arms, ears, and neck).

Excellent idea. I had a melanoma removed from inside forearm just below the elbow last year. It was the "contained" type fortunately. I wear long sleeve jerseys all the time but they are probably not really sun-protective.

15.5 and 800 feet on my gray day loop.

Here's the same picture of folks enjoying low tide. We had a record low tide the other day and this was a followup. One photo as seen and one edited on the phone with Google's Pixel Magic Eraser tool.

Today was a leisurely 25 or so miles. That puts me just over 600 for June. I think I am going to take the next 2 days off the bikes, to get chores done to clear me for the last 10 days of the month. Then a push to hit 1000 miles for June. which would be only the 2nd 1000 mile month I have had, ever. That will put me at 2300 on July 1st, giving me 6 months to get 2700 more for the 5000 mile mark. I have been playing catch up after being mostly inactive the first 4 months of the year, due to acute prostatitis. I am a bit surprised at how quickly I have regained my cycling conditioning.

66 miles, 1,585 feet of elevation. Long gravel loop around the bay over mixed surfaces. Almost constant headwinds over on the east side of the Bay....just for a bit more character building.

Gravel Metric Century

Not too hot today (30 degrees), mostly because it was cloudy.. I decided to try setting my tires to the pressure recommended for total loaded weight and tire size that the online pressure calculator suggested (60psi) instead of max pressure (85psi) that I previously ran, and it was a great decision. Much smoother than running at max pressure, and still my best ever average speed (29.8km/h) over this distance.

Well third ride on my new bike after 10 years+ off one. Working on conditioning rides and riding an old airport here in east Nashville that people use for walking, running and cycling. Decent headwind down one of the runways but managed to get just under 17 miles in and averaged 15mph based on Strava. Trying to get into light touring shape to get out with an old friend from grad school. Recently turned 60 and this wish I had done this much sooner.

Troul 06-19-22 01:21 PM

86 miles. I swear the temperature read 39F initially. I just looked away until the clouds broke... that temperature was 43F...

Durn I typically only ride 13-14 miles maybe twice a week. But then again fitting it into my schedule is a little difficult.

40 miles, 4,373 feet of elevation. Rode to Woodside, up King's Mountain Road and then up Skyline to Purisima Creek Redwood Open Space Preserve. I di the Whittemore Gulch Trail down which is some of the most gorgeous singletrack in the area. A peek at Ocean views, redwood forest, ferns, just outstanding. Then there is the Purisima Creek Trail climb out of the park which is where you pay for the fun. A little over 4 miles with about 1,600 feet of climbing, the middle part averages about 15% but there is tree cover for the most part. Epic.

I've been wanting to do this ride for a while. I thought today would be my last shot before summer got into full swing. I call it "The (metric) Half Century from Hell". It's actually 60km, not 50, but what's an extra 10km when you're riding up a mountain? Route on top, elevation on bottom.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4db3833e0a.jpg

1) it was hotter than I wanted to admit, and especially while going slow up the mountain.
2) I did not bring enough water. Especially the last five miles of climbing up the mountain, I was getting worried about my hydration. After I got done, I stopped and had lunch. I drank probably 40oz of water and still haven't peed yet.

That rise starting from the lowest spot to where my mark on the elevation chart is over 1400 feet of elevation in right about 10 miles. Absolutely brutal. This might actually be a "fun" ride in the right time of year. I can tell you now, June is *not* the right time of year.

Congratulations on completing your half from hell. Sounded brutal under that heat combined with climbs. I know there are a few of us, myself included, that have gone too far when its too hot and suffered mightily for it. Consider it a lesson learned and a half century earned - and the best part is that you didnt get heat stroke. Well done - no knock that s off;)

Between yesterday, 22.8 and 800 feet and today, 2 miles and 800 feet.
