Yep, they do tend to bully smaller birds, who in turn hire peregrines to exact revenge. It’s rough out there.

They were talking about this. Looks like they exaggerated the prevalence.

Blue Jays are known to take and eat eggs and nestlings of other birds, but we don’t know how common this is. In an extensive study of Blue Jay feeding habits, only 1% of jays had evidence of eggs or birds in their stomachs. Most of their diet was composed of insects and nuts.

Gross, did they hire some kids to shoot a bunch of them with bb guns? :wtf:

I did NOT tell them I think it's foolish and premature to have a group ride like that. I believe there are going to be 6-8 riders. They claim they will be socially distancing but I expect that won't happen.

I am trying not to judge people, but it's hard not to when you see educated and intelligent people do things that are potentially dangerous.

It’s a tough call. I err on the side of sometimes saying a little, because I feel like not saying anything implies you think what they’re doing is ok. And when you’re a doctor (you’re seen so more than I, although veterinarians arguably get more training in population med and epidemiology than physicians do) and you let something seem ok, it’s not the same impact as a layperson letting it seem ok. No one reads much into their layperson friend giving tacit approval to a health-related decision.

So I do speak up. Not always, but enough that people know I’m still not doing unnecessary out & about stuff and why.

Its not always well received. But that’s how the cookie crumbles. I kind of feel like I’ve gotten a lot of advantages in life by being a veterinarian. As a veterinarian, I swore an oath to protect public health. Now the day has come when I’m asked to live up to that oath. I don’t feel like I have any choice but to do so. It would feel weird to me to take the good from my profession but not be willing to pay the price with the bad parts.

Not saying that’s what you should do. Definitely there’s an argument that you can catch more flies with honey. And if it’s people I know will disregard what I say with contempt, I sometimes just say I’m not riding with anyone else right now because I’m exposed to a lot of people at work and I don’t want to be a source of infection to others. That gets the point across without the hackles going up that I’m criticizing their behavior.

88 today, if it wasn’t for the wind I would be too hot.

We'll never kill the viruses at 60F.

We're not killing them at 105F either.

It’s not heat that works, it’s policy. Look at NZ/OZ or South Korea for good examples.

I won’t say more because P&R.

datlas 05-15-20 04:23 PM

Fun fact: Chris Froome has over 200,000 followers on Strava. I am not one of them.

And 175 followers in the Tour. Heyo!

I'm just going to embrace my dad-joke future.

Damn, I need a haircut. When working, I had a standing three week appointment and went to four weeks after I retired. It's now been 10 weeks and my hair is thick and curly. I'm looking like a seedy ne'er-do-well. :D

I won't either. Central Mexico has similar issues.

sounds like every other cyclist I know. Doesn’t sound like it’s worth to follow.

Pirkaus 05-15-20 05:03 PM

When the Cooper's hawk shows up, all the song birds around the condo disappear. It's almost eerie how quickly it happens.

Other than people you know, what constitutes a good follow on Strava?
