Are looking to sell this or buy it?

In my area I would probably want to give $125 to $150 but would probably go to $200. But I'm a keeper, not a flipper. This looks to be in good condition and has the labels and reflectors. I like survivor bikes from the 80s.

Excellent shape for a 1986(?) model. Came with 650B wheels/tires. Top of the line touring model as I recall.
Value depends on location..

wrk101 06-16-22 07:29 PM

I'd go higher, more like $400. But it depends on the location.

nesteel 06-16-22 07:30 PM

I'd give 200 for all these I could find, but that's WELL short of a decent valuation. I'd say closer to 500-600, especially in that condition.
I owned one about two years ago,, and sold it to a forum member for a bit more than 200 in unoriginal condition.

As mentioned, this was Raleigh USA’s top touring model. Pretty scarce and difficult to find if you’re seeking one. This one appears to be in great shape. If selling, you will definitely find interested buyers but might have to go outside your local market. Find one of these buyers and I think you could get near the $400 listed above.

Hot bike market I believe. I wouldn’t accept less than $400 for it. Comparable bikes today are $700.00 and up for frame only. That looks like it was gently or barely ridden. Good luck!

The Raleigh Portage is a very sought-after bicycle and you only need to look at recent eBay auctions to see that the estimates proposed above are very low!

1986 Raleigh Portage - Original 650b Vintage Touring Legend (51cm C-T) | eBay

This one just sold for $1,825 + $200 for shipping.

I've been watching every Portage that's passed by eBay over the past few years (have the search saved) hoping for a larger one to come up at a decent price. I've literally seen just the framesets sell for $1,000 or more! Take the time to put it on eBay and advertise it with good photos and the option to ship within the US. Assuming you're selling, start by asking at least $1,500 then slowly move down if it doesn't sell quickly enough for you. It'll be worth the time. If you're buying, grab it for whatever doesn't break the bank!

eBay sales in the last year: three complete bike sold in the last year: the one above, one for $865, and one for $575. The only frameset sale sold for $300.

I'm a pretty active seller on eBay. I've gotten the dreaded 1099 for several years. eBay gives me access to Terapeak, where you can see all sales in the last 12 months.

Right, and I told you I've been watching the market for these for a number of years. "Raleigh Portage" is on my eBay saved searches and I see them all. My statement above is precisely aligned with trends in the market over the past several years and people who advertised their bicycles for low prices with buy-it-nows got what they asked. That doesn't depreciate the fact that several have also sold for well over $1,000 and that I've also seen an individual frame sell for $1,000.

Again, I also have access to Terapeak (anyone who sells anything on eBay does these days) and will again point out that the one that sold for $865 was the same bicycle with the same title as the $575 that was an apparently aborted transaction earlier in 2021.

These bikes were only made from 1984' - 1986'.

zukahn1 06-28-22 07:22 PM

I'm with the $400-500 nicer Raliegh American is top end and highly under rated. But for on of there top end light tourers with great paint a knowing buyer will pay this much on a local sale for 555 tubed RBCA.

zukahn1 06-28-22 07:33 PM

These middle and top end Raliegh America bikes are under valued I would agree to a knowing buyer even local sale $400-500 is not of reason.

I believe it is listed for $550.

bikemig 06-29-22 04:56 PM

The 650b wheels give this bike some cachet. Without that, I doubt the bike would see some of the high valuations on this thread. There's no denying that's a big plus.

plonz 06-30-22 08:38 PM

OP’s bike has been listed for 3 days and price has already been dropped to $525. Hopefully goes for at least $500 to keep us cheapskates in check. ;)

plonz 07-05-22 08:12 PM

I know... let it go. On the market over a week, price has been reduced 3 times and now sits at $472.50.

Blue horseshoe loves Raleigh Portage... :)

Chuck M 07-06-22 04:10 AM

I'm not knocking the seller's photos as there may be a reason better photos are not available. But there was a thread a while back that discussed how to present a bike when selling. I still don't think I would pay $500 for this as it isn't something I'm looking for. But I understand that there are those that would and I can't help but wonder if this bike taken outside and photographed better would sell faster and for a bit more. It is a nice bike and in very good survivor condition. FWIW, facebook notified me this morning that the post is getting popular and may sell soon.

brucemanchan 07-10-22 07:41 PM

Were is this bike for sale? What size is it may I ask? How would one get a hold of the owner?

Chuck M 07-10-22 08:37 PM
