What do you mean by "now"? In the 30+ years I've been serious about riding bikes, bike folks have always referred to them as "saddles".

philbob57 12-12-22 03:35 PM

They have seat tubes, seat seat pins, and God knows what else that have been named strangely, but they've always had saddles, in the opinion of some people. Brooks, for example, has been advertising saddles since the 19th century.

It was the cabal

freeranger 12-12-22 03:37 PM

Saddle is the more accurate description, by definition, which for me brings the question-if it's a saddle (which I agree with), then why is the saddle attached to a seatpost, which fits into a seat tube? Confusing. Oops-guess was typing when #3 was being submitted.

Hmm, With my grandfather and I always called any bike seat(including motocyles) Saddles. When I fall off the bike, he was the one who taught to "get back in the saddle." This was between the 1970's till 1992(when my grandfather passed away).

Your premise is faulty:

A horse is a horse of course of course unless it is a bicycle and your posterior is on a saddle of course.

Big Saddle is a better name for a cabal (cf post 4) than is Big Seat.

You might need a better helmet, I think you have crashed the old noggin a few too many times. The part of the bicycle in which you are seated is the saddle, why it is on a seatpost in a seat tube I don't know but it is a saddle, not a seat, not a chair, a saddle.

79pmooney 12-12-22 04:54 PM

I wouldn't burden a lofty saddlepost with a lowly seat so why would I be dressing my ordinary seatpost with a highfalutin' saddle?

I've succumbed to calling those seats saddles at times, but all my bikes get seats; properly mounted on seatposts which are stuck in seatubes. (I grew up with saddles but we threw those on horses; not one of which had a seat anything.)

Fredo76 12-12-22 05:15 PM

Bicycles only had 'seats' in Penthouse Letters...

As long as it's comfortable that's all I care about, makes no difference to me what people call them.

Iride01 12-12-22 05:55 PM

I don't really care what you call it. Saddle is my preference, but I'm sure I've probably blurted out seat plenty of times. So either works for me.

And I too am curious how you think they just started calling them saddles?

…and that boys and girls is the reason they are called brifters. Not brakes and shifters or as the truly unwashed call them, “shakes”.

Once upon a time there was a horse and placed on that horse was a riding conveyance called a….. I forget. When the stork brought the bicycle to man and woman-kind as well as the theys, thems, and all the letters of the alphabet, a name was needed for the thing all those people would sit upon. Borrowing a handy term already invented by a mad genius, and rather than calling it a chair, it became known far and wide as a…..I forget. Rhymes with addle. The end.

Well, they are actually called shifters, but if you want to be really technical, they are D.I.L.D.O.S. - Deceleration Input Lever Derailleur Operation System.

It’s all the Brit’s fault.

Their cars have boots and wings too.

Not to mention bonnets! That is totally insane. Ask any suffragette.

You don’t see them wearing car hoods on their heads. And if you do, you need to make an appointment with a qualified medical professional.
