I'm sure I’ll be starting a thread about that next week as well.

I have, on occasion. Mostly seems to be on the bike with the compact crankset, though now I think of it, the other bike where it sometimes happens is ALSO Campagnolo. On that one(the non-compact one), it happens when the chain is dirty.

Hmmmm. I wonder if I should set the lower FD limit screw closer to the chain?

Its a possibility, I need to stop commuting for my sanity and she doesn’t want to live “in” Charlotte.
Probably about 5 years out.

Looks like they had good cycling weather in DC this weekend.

I dunno, looks kinda chilly. I think I'd pick idling a big rig down the road at 8 mph. :)

LesterOfPuppets 03-20-22 07:04 PM

Actually looks more like 3 mph, after watching the video.

It's the trucker convoy and he was pissing them off.

Seriously, I don't want to ride with people that feel intimidated just because my wife and I show up. I just think it's funny that we are both over 70 and I'm 50# overweight at least and have health issues.

This is road cycling. Rip thier legs off and eat their livers! Motivation is where you find it.......

Today is happened.

The front derailer needs an adjustment once a month. If I had any complaint about my Sram that would be it.

My etap drops one under rough road conditions once a year. The factory says it's from the rear derailuer bounce at extreme chainline angles on rough roads that's why they dampened the axs rear derailuer spring. It's not worth fretting over. It's happened twice.
My force has never dropped a chain. I've heard it can be retrofitted onto the etap derailuer but I don't think it's worth bothering with.

I took out the 09 Tarmac yesterday for apparently 55 miles ride. Which is odd because in the past its always been a 62 mile ride.....:banned:

I finally was able to use a set of mavic ksyrium helium wheels I bought from an old forum user 10 years ago. The rear had a butt ton of miles and was bent. If made it as straight as I could and got about 1/2 a season out of it, back then. Then I moved to carbon wheels. Well on Ebay a couple weeks ago I got a rear wheel for pretty cheap. And scavenged the rim to rebuild the helium. It came out fantastic rides like dream.
I put a set of Continental Grand Sport Race tires on them that I bought last year. I have to say I'm pretty happy with them after thier first ride. They are 25mm and went on 20mm rim no problem. This frame is just a bit wider in the rear than my '11, 25mm don't rub.
The parts to upgrade the shifting should be here by the end of the week. Can't wait to get it finished up.

Re: chain drop/chain catchers, I would like to think that a properly setup drivetrain would never drop a chain and BITD when I rode 6 speed it NEVER happened. NEVER. EVER.

However, it seems the more modern drivetrains (possibly complicated by compact cranksets) make it happen occasionally to me, even when drivetrain and FD are set up properly.

Before I installed my chain catchers, I would drop the chain when shifting from big to little maybe on 0.5% of front shifts. One in 200. Rare, but often enough that it makes sense for me to have the chain catcher.

YMMV.

p.s. my experience is limited to Shimano cable-activated drivetrains. Obv may be different for SRAM/Campy/Di2.

BillyD 03-21-22 06:15 AM

Back when I used to ride the only time I dropped a chain was on that rare occasion when I neglected to shift down for a hill.

I am guilty of this. Cost me $600.00 in broken parts.

I know what it's like to have problems with a club. It's happened to me twice. Being fast is a heavy cross to bear, makes you a target. If they can't beat you on the road then they will try to do it in the boardroom.
Eff em!

It got up to around 75 in Philly on Saturday. I rode around town in shorts and a t-shirt.

That's a t-shirt too much. Apparently.

Dang. Didn't even think of that. Dallas in a tent during the summer? Ugh.

My first camping experience was when I rode across the country. We had some miserable nights in the Midwest. I can honestly say that I would rather sleep in a tent when it's in the 30s than when it's warm/hot and humid.

How does Lukoil Genesis 0-20 compare to Mobile 1 in the same grade? Or Castrol, for that matter?

I don't mind camping in the summer if it's someplace really neat. But, who would want to live in a tent in the Texas summer when you have to go to work every morning? If you are going to do that, then just buy a tent for $60 and find a comfy spot under an overpass.
