Longest Ride on Your C&V bike.
I've done several centuries, and bunch of 50-80 mile rides. However, I have only a couple of big single day rides.
What's the farthest you have ridden your old bike? In one day, multi day, or full blown tour across the country? Photos of said bikes encouraged(bonus points for pictures of bikes on that particular ride). Here's mine. July 2014. 168 miles and 10,000' of pedaling uphill. I will make a note here. northbend was the person who encouraged me do this ride. Since then, I have ridden many of the mountain passes here in the PNW. Thank you for that, Matt!https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...5588525025.jpg 1988 Stan Johnson. Had different wheels on it back then. |

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...b9c41371c.jpeg Still the record for a single days travel is 64 miles on this Trek TX706. Right before the ride I installed a brand new, all plastic, Cinelli Unicantor saddle. Luckily the gamble paid off and I was uninjured from the saddle experiment! |
Don't have a pic but I did 120 miles in two days for an overnight tour on an 81 Miyata 912.

1 day, 150k, 10-11k feet climbing for the first 2 pics. 2 days, 200k, 8-9k climbing for the last 2 pics.

RAMROD 2016
152 miles 10k elevation https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...1b2d6e7e85.jpg same ride as the first post(slight route change). It felt like the ride was easier on the white bike.. |
I have done a few centuries on my Miyata 310, both when it was newer and more recently. The longest ride was 175 miles over two days for an MS ride a few years ago. I rode the century route on Saturday, then the standard route on Sunday.

I rode my '87 Technium 109 miles..... in '89 as a teenager. Nowadays my body won't let me ride more than about 3hrs.
|
This is a cheat - I did the Detroit Belle Isle marathon ('round and 'round the island 40 times), 200 miles, on an '82 Trek 613. Why is it a cheat? The bike wasn't C&V at the time*, it was brand new. And no, thanks to my brother, in whose care the bike was stolen, no pic.
I do plan on a 62-mile (one mile per year of age) ride on my birthday in the near future, either on my go-to '89 Circuit or my just-acquired '87 Nishiki Cresta GT. If this thread is still here, I'll post again 30 years from now after my 92-mile birthday ride. *(Come to think of it, neither was I......) |
Single day rides:
230.2 on a Colnago Master Extra Light
RAW 2021, including cat-herding after climbs. 11-sp DA, though. I used a Precisa fork, though https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...d7e456805.jpeg 183 (and bonked) on a 1991 Paramount. RAW 2019, 9-sp DA, though. 150 on a 1999 Coppi (steel) in 2021 (training ride) Downtube shifters. 125 on a 1992 Series 5 PDG Downtube shifters. 117 on a 1987 Ironman Wabash Ride 2019 101 on a 1987 Ironman Assault on Mount Mitchell on a Schwinn Varsity. I was 22 and didn’t know any better. It's called young and dumb. I'd like to do RAGBRAI. Hats off to those who can ride the OEM C&V. Serious stuff. |

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...e51892c0e3.jpg 1984 Miyata 310 Ok, not exactly true... I HAVE been riding Prospect Park every evening on that TX706 with the long term goal of passing as many CF bikes as possible. On bike as old as I am wearing my sneakers and toe clips 😆 Nothing feels as good as passing a rider on modern equipment, and it's entirely possible since they don't know we're racing and are very likely on a cool down lap! :ride: |
Did many centuries on my old bikes. However, they were not classic or vintage at that time!
Does that count? |
Me and a buddy did Seattle to Portland in one day back in 2003. Our total for the day was 218 miles; I rode the Davidson, which was still outfitted with Campy NR/SR back in those days:
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...c32ee00560.png Found it, so I will add it: one of only two photos of me (excepting the pro shot above) taken during this event. Guess we hoped the event photographer was good with his camera in those days! Anyway, my buddy's wife took this as we arrived at the hotel in Portland: https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...db5c3cbb0e.jpg If I look knackered, but happy, it's because I am :) DD |

I did the Davis Double Century on my Bob Jackson. That was 1978, and the Jackson was not C&V at the time.
|
I did many 30+ day tours on my Dawes Super Galaxy back in the early 80's and did plenty of 100-180 milers on a late 70's Miyata. I'd start on the North Shore and ride towards the Vermont border and back. I've done a 400k brevet on an old 1972 Masi GC but cannot imagine riding it that far again, need the comfort of carbon and new stuff.

I did a Century on my long gone C&V Centurion Semi Pro.
Pic of bike but not from that day. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-J...2/DSCF6017.JPG Furthest ride on a C&V with pics from that day is the 70 mile gravel ride that I did on my Trek 710. https://dgtzuqphqg23d.cloudfront.net...-2048x1536.jpg And a close up of the gravel dust. https://dgtzuqphqg23d.cloudfront.net...-1536x2048.jpg |
Some years back, @rhm, @TimmyT, and I did a 300k/186 mile ride starting in eastern PA. I was on my '76 Wes Mason, since sold off (though I have a different Wes Mason now, which was my 2022 CA Eroica and 2021 Cino bike):

Forgot that I did a 76 mile gravel ride on my old Pinarello Stelvio.

I will pile on to iabs second group of photos.
Two days and 110ish miles with my kid. Looking forward to it again next week. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...7e7d674382.jpg Where the real fun begins. I'd have a tough time moving forward from this point with wood rims and cork brake pads.. yes, thats to you iab and northbend. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...54ea01f5af.jpg |
I am not sure it counts but my mid 80's Peter Mooney did a couple 200k rides this year. Once with drop bars and once with Nitto Moustache bars. The not sure part is because I have new parts on it. I could see myself doing long tours of 80-100 miles per day with that bike. A brilliantly designed frame, the old sport tourer type geometry that I converted to 650B
|
I did 170 miles on my old Colnago Master with a good friend who used to hang around here.

240 miles on my White DeBernardi at a "Tinbutt" 12 hour marathon
But ---- to be fair --- I was 25 y/o then (in 1996) and the bike was only a year old ------ however - when i ordered the frame and had it built -- it was almost considered C&V back then . The most common rides in the peloton were Cannondales, and Specialized Epics with the carbon main tubes A lugged steel Italian bike with downtube shifters was an anachronism in 1996 -- i was dubbed the "steel is real" guy by my club But - did a metric century on the old blue DeBErnardi at the bottom in the somewhat recent past - maybe 2 years ago https://i.imgur.com/sgk5WEf.jpg https://i.imgur.com/siDBV1X.jpg |
I rode my Raleigh Sports 150 miles in two days a few years ago for the MS150.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...80f70b0cd4.jpg Several people were concerned that I would not be able to make it. To be fair, it has been updated with aluminum rims and an S5 hub. I've ridden my Raleigh Wyoming for the MS150 several times since then. Also completed a century on it two years ago. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ae74700dc7.jpg |
Another 'cheater' here.
From 1996-99 I did a ride called CAMP (Cycle Across Missouri Parks). It was a 7 day cross state ride that started near Kansas City and finished near St. Louis - it took a different route every year. IIRC the longest year the route was 512 miles. My '91 Ciöcc was the choice for 3 of those years. I don't have any pics of me from that ride, but this one is from 1996 after a century on a very hot and humid 4th of July weekend. https://ciocctoo.com/forums/var/albu...g?m=1656706197 |
The only true single day century I've done, was on the Oregon mountain plateau, going past Salem and all those other towns. It was a few years ago, on a '85 (?) Trek 620. My mind is going on the years, lol, but it was the dark blue 620 with the same geometry as the 720. This was a southbound trip, in case it matters. 🙄😁
I didn't exactly plan that ride, never do, it just happened, and I was surprised when I counted up the miles that evening. 🙂 EDIT: I think it was 107 miles, BTW, but not 100% sure. 🤔 The mind wobbles some, these days. 😁 |
