Rod brake Raleigh 3 speed
 

I picked this up at a local auction last summer for a ridiculous price. I have a friend who recently asked me if I had any bikes for sale. He is 6'-6" so I thought this might fit the bill. So I wiped this down, a few drops of oil in the SA hub and just took her for a quick spin around the neighborhood loop. Front brake needs a little adjustment but otherwise feels pretty good. Not sure what model this would be.

Looks like mine. The 1973 catalog shows one with Tourist on the chainguard. I think mine is a 1968 since the rear hub has 68 on it.

That ia one nice ride is what that is! A Raleigh Tourist, also known by model number: DL-1.

Pad should be mounted as in the pic. That way it is pushed up against the rim when braking & grabs more.

Raleigh Tourist DL-1; I'm going to guess 1971 or 1972 based on the updated chainguard decal. What's the date on the AW 3-speed hub?

This sure is a nice one. Somebody did replace the mudguard stays. These new ones use a dual bolt back plate clamp and are superior to the originals that had a loop formed into the wire that held a single mounting bolt to the mudguards. I'm very fond of these bikes. Good find.

I now see where the front brake pads need to be reversed.

I had a '67 DL1L which is the step through frame. There was no place to store it so I let it go to someone who could restore it. I'm thinking that American spec. models had hockey stick chain guards instead of the closed ones. Letting that go was my biggest (no pun intended) bike regret.

Also worth noting that the brakes are set up moto style or Euro

I fiddled with the pads yesterday, had them all apart, there is only so many ways in which you can flip and configure these pads and mounts without modifying anything. So I went back to the original mount and adjusted the rod. They do perform better now.

Mine were mounted as in the pic when I got it. Maybe they have to be swapped to the opposite sides?
