As he's already huge, how is he not way outside the UCI box here?

Facebook link to the 59. He did a 1:00:08 to win the final by a second too.
Edit: and backed it up minutes later far another 4th in the Keirin |

Here's a nice writeup of Glaetzer's sub-minute kilo - and its historical context.
To me, the other big story of this World Cup set (Pruszkow and Manchester) was Jenn Valente's omnium silver and gold. I looked back at the Pruszkow results - she wound up finishing only a couple points behind Wild at the end of it. She had kind of a bad elimination, got boxed in and finished 7th. A couple higher places could have made the difference in the end, in the omnium. [also NB, Wild got relegated in one sprint she won for a pretty egregious blue band violation) I wonder about her world-class level race experience - how much she's had. She certainly has the horsepower to compete. Whatever her ride in Pruszkow, she definitely put it together for Manchester - Won the scratch, Tempo, 2nd in the elim, and sealed the omnium win in the points race against a very strong Katie Archibald. Beating her is no joke. It looks like Valente is filling hammer's shoes and opening up some room for mass start racing in the next olympic cycle. Not sure how many people Team USA can send for endurance track stuff so I wouldn't be surprised if Team USA looks for another team pursuit member with whom Valente can ride the madison. That certainly ups the potential medal count! |

Maybe Phinney? |
oh, no, i know about her palmares - i meant mass start race experience. i don't think she's started world cup mass start races before.
i've been in races with her. i know she's good. |

i've been in races with her. i know she's good. 2011: Jr World Scratch Gold 2011: Jr World Keirin Bronze 2012: US Elite Keirin Gold 2012: Jr World Keirin Gold 2012: Pan Am Omnium Bronze 2014: Pan Am Omnnium Bronze 2014: US Elite Omnium Gold 2015: Pan Am Scratch Gold And that's just when she made the podium. I'm sure she was in a lot more mass start races when she didn't podium gathering experience. It looks like she gets more international playing time than any other US track racer that I can think of besides maybe Hammer. But, Hammer rarely (if ever) races Scratch and never races Keirin in international comp. Just IP, TP, and Omnium. Valente races IP, TP, Keirin, Scratch, and Omnium :D |
world cups are a decisively higher level than pan ams. my first comment said "world-class." national championships aren't world-class either. i was there in 2014: check the number of starters for the women's omnium.
like i said, my point was: i think this might be her first time racing mass start world cup races. |

How often do privateers beat out national teams? I don't know the details, but basically all one has to do is register as a UCI Track Trade Team and do the necessary paperwork. The rider is an paid or unpaid employee of the team. The UCI has a Points system. You get points for placing in official UCI events. The bigger the event, the more points on the line. For World Cup Participation: Participation 3.4.004 The competitions shall be for national selections and registered track teams comprising riders aged 18 and over. In a specific event, Top 4 Junior riders at the latest Junior World Championships can participate in the World Cup of the same season. The participation in the individual events shall be restricted to riders with at least 250 points in the respective UCI Track Ranking. To be eligible, each rider must have the minimum amount of points required either on the opening date of the online registration of the first leg of the World Cup (art. 3.4.005), or in the latest update of the respective UCI Track Ranking. For the development of track cycling, the track commission may grant dispensation of this requirement. The participation in each competition of the world cup determines the eligibility of the national federations to the corresponding event of the world championships according to article 9.2.027bis. So, at the national level: - Elite Nats 1st Place: 100pts - Elite Nats 1st Place: 90pts - Elite Nats 1st Place: 80pts ... - Elite Nats 24th and later Place: 1pts At one time, I had 1 UCI Point http://i.qkme.me/3525ql.jpg Or participate in other UCI Senior (Elite) events like many of the Pro events held at TTown in the summer. Those should offer points as well. So, to gain automatic entry into a World Cup event, the rider(s) would have to have at least 250pts in their respective disciplines (not sure how that works...if it's by event or Sprinter/Enduro, or simply Track...) OR "Special Dispensation", Read: If the UCI thinks you can hang, they will let you participate. For example, Chris Hoy is retired and his points have expired. But, if he joined a team, trained, and then asked the UCI to participate in a World Cup event, he would likely be granted access. OR I think National Teams get automatic access for any rider they choose. So, if some hotshot kid is burning up the track but doesn't have enough points, (s)he can still ride as part of the National Team. I think this is how Philip Hindes came out of nowhere leading up to London. I could be totally wrong about all of the above, but that's my limited understanding :D |
Great Britain has FIVE UCI Pro Track Teams this year:
100%me MATRIX PRO CYCLING TEAM BREEZE TEAM KGF TEAM WALES Two of which are managed by British Cycling. I wonder if this is a way to get their riders some experience and points. |
Gotcha- thanks!

Today I learned that I have some UCI track points (for barely holding on at the cdn elite track champs) WOOHOO!

Plus, Milton is less than 10 drive from NYC or Trexlertown (among many other US cities). What happened to the team sprint team from NYC, Star Track? You, know, our current elite national champions. Of the 1st and 2nd place TS teams from US Elites, 4 live within a day's drive of Milton. They qualify via points as well as deserve to represent the US National Team. Our Keirin and Sprint champ and 3rd placed sprinter live in PA. They could have road tripped up there and raced for experience and World Championship and Olympic points. WTF is going on with USA Cycling? :foo: |
I wasn't even gonna ask about the US as I just assume every other national fereration on the planet is more interested in elite track sprinting than USAC.

I recall when Jamie Staff was leading the US Sprint team, he was pulling folks off of the couch and out of retirement to sprint. He recruited far and wide, experienced and inexperienced racers got to race and the program was much better for it.

yup. though worth noting that they've been fielding a women's TS team, mandy marquart and maddy godby.
