How much climbing did you do in 2022?

What was your total elevation gain (in units of miles or km)?

I am trying to get a sense for what is typical, at least amongst those who keep track of these kinds of statistics.

Tomm Willians 12-25-22 11:39 PM

I only started keeping track at the beginning of October but I have exceeded 71,000’ at this point.
Hoping to add some more before end of year but have a heavy storm coming in.

rsbob 12-25-22 11:55 PM

216,235 feet with a few more to go before the 31st.

Polaris OBark 12-26-22 05:56 AM

286,806 ft, here. (I guess that is going to be the unit.)

A few more if I count trainer miles (there aren't that many).

I'm hoping to sneak one more ride in before that storm arrives.

merlinextraligh 12-26-22 07:47 AM

Strava says 276,319 ft, which is probably a little light given the occasional ride i didn’t record.

Not bad living in Florida

bampilot06 12-26-22 08:21 AM

251,457 feet.

I imagine this will be 252 something by the end of the year.

Chandne 12-26-22 09:27 AM

Around 200,000 ft. I usually get around 300,000 but with a toddler and being sick for 3 months, it was about all I could get in.

cinelliguy 12-26-22 09:49 AM

Elev Gain 420,072 ft, Distance 5,440.4 mi so far, probably not much more to add for the year. 68 yrs.

DaveSSS 12-26-22 10:23 AM

I don't think there's any typical. I ride in northern Colorado where 80 feet per mile is common, so my 5700 miles would easily reach around 456,000. I just started using a Garmin 530 in October, so I have the total ascent on all of my regular routes. One route has about 160 feet per mile for 30 miles, but then it's mostly downhill for the next 24. Most areas don't have a halfway point that's over 2500 feet higher elevation in only 22 miles, and a total ascent of over 3000, with all of the undulations.

Good grief!!!! Your mileage must have been insane to get that much elevation in Florida 😳😳😳😳
I live near Lake Tahoe and even with that 276+ would be a lot of riding.

It’s kinda early for the annual pissing contest thread(s), but I will bite: 593819 feet. I might make it to 600k feet.

I do love to climb.

I'm trying to rationalize my limited horizontal output.

MidTNBrad 12-26-22 11:29 AM

142,252 feet over 2,501 miles this year.

spelger 12-26-22 01:14 PM

i set a goal of 7K miles and 500k feet. i will make that but it was not easy. next year i'm planning on just riding but the challenge is so hard to pass up. i though about 1 million feet but can't see that happening.

In the middle of the year, I moved from a very hilly area to a flat area. In the hilly area I was usually around 7k-8k miles per year with around 450k feet of climbing. I expect that my first full year here on the flatlands (2023) will probably be under 100k climbing.

Fun story: back in the hilly part of the country, I once went out on a big climbing event (group ride, but a big one) that is always held right before Christmas- so, right near the year's end. After the ride, we were in the parking lot, looking at our computers, and a guy said, "Hey, I hit 10,000 miles today...And a million feet of climbing." That impressed the hell out of me.

mcours2006 12-26-22 06:05 PM

Currently sitting at 18,896.9 km and 116,141 m.

But if you count my running: 1,428.8 km and 7,765 m, I'm over 20,000 km and 120,000 m.

Jedneck 12-26-22 06:14 PM

550000ft gain and 11000ish miles. Most (80-90%) are commuting miles. And to add to the pissin contest temperature range of -10*f to 100*f

mstateglfr 12-26-22 08:04 PM

42'/mile average

95.6'/mile for me, but I suspect you have a much larger denominator.

Maybe. It's just flatter here too. Most of my solo gravel riding ends up at 50-70'/mile of climbing and 70 is plenty for me. I can't imagine averaging 100'/mi. My goodness.

mschwett 12-26-22 08:41 PM

354k today, should manage to hit 360k which was the target. around 60 feet per mile. commutes excluded.

downtube42 12-26-22 09:24 PM

220k ft over 5800 miles for 38 ft/mile. Back when I lived in Indiana, it ranged from 14 to 19 ft/mile. I expect those years when I managed 19, I rode a fair number of miles in Kentucky.

I should extract the data for the 11 months I lived in west Texas, where I had to ride 10 miles from home to find anything remotely resembling a climb. But if I had a measure of headwind miles, west Texas would be killer.

obrentharris 12-26-22 10:25 PM

288,400 feet of climbing. 3,840 miles. 75 feet/mile.
Respectable for a 70-year-old I think.

Well...
I was chuffed about my 2022 climbing until now. 😮 😀. 149000'
The biggest local hill is 256', I do more climbing when Zwifting, so 22,000' in December.

rsbob 12-27-22 09:49 AM

Appears that the majority climb 200,000’ to 300,000’ with a few over achievers, whom can be excused for their exuberance. :D And we can rightly safely assume that anyone not responding to this thread, but opened it to look, are so humiliated, so broken, so humbled that they are considering changing sports to shuffleboard or lawn bowling. ;)
