Off Brand (Way Off) Question

https://www.ebay.com/itm/294081596207
Would anyone here use one of these on their bike? I'm thinking for winter use only or otherwise. Thanks for your thoughts in advance. Smokey

I wouldn't bolt that onto my bike if I got it for free.

Most of the eBay ad images don't even show an actual cassette with 11 cogs! It's a hard no from me...

MarcusT 11-09-22 11:03 PM

No

Hard NO

I don’t think any of you read the description before you passed on it. At $9 it is a pretty compelling case for a heat resisting flywheel with mud draining holes.

“High quality:Made of high quality steel, anti-corrosive, good heat resistance, do not worry about the long-term use of friction heat, affecting its life.

No noise:This freewheel characterized by smooth rotation without much noise, high precision internal thread, ensure close connection with bicycle hub, smooth operation.

Accurate shifting:The effect of the guide chain is accurate, allowing smooth riding and accurate shifting.

Easy to clean&maintain:It adopts the design of chain guide groove and mud drain hole. The design of the chain guide slot makes the speed change more sensitive, and the mud drain hole is easier to clean and rarely get grubbed up on the inside.

Application:This kind of flywheel is one of the most durable and long-lasting flywheels of multi-speed bicycles.Suitable for mountain bikes and folding bicycles, road bikes ,city bikes, and so on.”

How could anyone say no?

John

Not by choice. I would look elsewhere for savings.

Not unless it comes with a Dubai call girl.

Maybe if I was a person of the faith. It looks to be a sacred cassette.

$9? I'm guessing this is another Pride of China product made from soft steel which will deform the first time you use it. Kind of like when my wife bought screwdrivers at the dollar store... first time I used one (Phillips) the screw stripped out the screwdriver since the metal was so soft. I probably could have bitten down on it and left teeth marks in it.

You get what you pay for... and I would only buy this if I wanted to decorate a room with bicycle parts.

Or make a rapper's necklace.

smd4 11-10-22 08:23 AM

For $9 bucks? I'd buy it just out of curiosity. Seriously, what do you have to lose?

unterhausen 11-10-22 08:27 AM

I wouldn't buy an off brand chain, but I might consider a cassette

Technically, true. But really? The perpetual cheapness of folks involved in this expensive hobby never ceases to amaze me.

This^^^

mtnbud 11-10-22 09:34 AM

I bet you'll get an 8sp cassette like the pictures and not a 11 speed like the description. I've noticed some of the made in china sold stuff has become more and more deceptive in their ads. You can't believe the description or the pictures for that matter.

I am hardly cheap. (I own a boutique, custom ti bike and Rapha jerseys, for example. I also spend a fair amount of money touring.) I am simply not stupid. Wouldn't waste my time (My time has a value, which is why I don't sit in front of the computer scouring the Internets to save a couple of bucks on inner tubes or a bottle of chain lube.) or $9 (plus a chain) putting that thing on a bike.

Did you even look at the listing? Pictured item is 8 speeds, not 11 as described. A one point it is called a cassette. At another, it's called a freewheel. But knock yourself out. I'm sure you know the old saying about a fool and his money.

Now I remember why I added you to my iggy list. :roflmao2:

Then why do you keep responding to me? Just can't help yourself, I guess.

2old 11-10-22 09:43 AM

What you might have to lose (or gain depending on how you view it) is a long walk home. Why worry about saving a few bucks on something that costs pennies per mile?

icemilkcoffee 11-10-22 09:53 AM

I fail to see what the big problem is. Worse comes to worse it will wear out quickly. It can't wear any worse than the aluminum or titanium larger cogs on a Shimano cassette. And it can't shift any worse than a flat sided 8v Campy cassette.
The chinese are good at one thing- taking an existing product and mass producing it at super cheap prices. Take advantage of it.
