Just showing off the finished bike

Almost 2 years ago I found a 1987 Specialized Sirrus frame on Craigslist for $40. I immediately snapped it up. The paint was not great. It had been almost completely stripped down already, so I figured I'd restore it but with a modern twist.

Here's what it looked like what I got it:

And here's what it looks like now:

The frame has been powder coated and I cold set the rear triangle. It's a 1x11 SRAM Rival drivetrain with Sensah Empire shifters. I had some trouble with tires, since this frame simply will not accept anything bigger than 700x25. Even the 25mm wide tires are a very tight fit. I got decals from Velocals. The graphics are consistent with the originals, but different colors than the original scheme.

I really love the obnoxious yellow and pink. I figured since I couldn't find a Centurion Ironman in my size for a sensible price I'd apply similar color wisdom to this and I think it looks fantastic.

Great job on the build! The yellow and pink colorway(with the black components)look awesome 👌.

If you don't mind me asking, what made you decide on a 1x setup?

If you are open to suggestions, a black seatpost would go well on that.

I agree - a black seatpost would look even better, but it's an odd size. It's 27.0mm. At the time I searched high and low for a 27.0mm seatpost and just couldn't find one. 27.2mm are easy to get but absolutely will not fit in this frame. I just looked and it appears that 27.0mm black seatposts are more readily available than they were 16 months ago when I was ordering components, so maybe I'll grab one!

I went with 1X partially to see how I get along with it and partially because I hate fiddling with front derailleurs. So far, I quite like it.

Good lookin’ machine!! I really like the 1x choice.

Well done - the bike is beautiful! That said, were it me, I would dump the bright yellow handlebar tape for black. I think it would look much better and not show the dirt once the bike has experienced some use. But that, I realize, is a personal preference and not a thought that should be cast in stone. I also agree with the black seat post suggestion - that would blend in perfectly - again, my opinion.

Thumbs up! Looks great and very functional.

Also looks like a great area you have for riding? Where are you located?

The bike and scenery are lovely! Have fun!

Yellow wasn't my original first choice, but my daughter gave me the handlebar tape as a gift. When it gets dirty and/or worn, I'll replace it with something else, but in the meantime it makes her feel like she had a part in the restoration.

As for the black seatpost, it definitely would look better than the silver one. I did a lot of the work on this bike during COVID and parts were in really tight supply. It appears that black seatposts in 27.0mm are now available again, so I will likely change that.

I live in Logan, Utah, which is definitely not an easy place to ride. Narrow streets, heavy traffic, and way, way too many lifted smoke belching trucks. North of town, however, is farming area and is a decent place to ride.

Bolstering and praising a young person's help is, indeed, a great reason for the handlebar tape choice. We think alike. With three kids, seven grand kids and now two great grand kids, I more than understand the need to be supportive of young initiative.

The Specialized Sirrus from that era is an amazing bike, and I still marvel at how PERFECT the handling on my '88 truly is. That's a very cool modern build on a classic frame!

Those Park Tool videos on YouTube are sooooo helpful! I used them for a lot of tasks, including bar wrapping.
