Three bikes out....two bikes in.
 

I may not be riding much right now but the stable has changed a bit this month. First off the Kuwahara Count I picked up last summer was passed on to a new owner.

Then last weekend the Giordana XL Super and Bianchi Trofeo sold to a young couple.

It always feels great to get the older, neglected bikes like the Bianchi and the Kuwahara sorted out and back in the hands of new appreciative owners.. The guy that got the Giordana was totally stoked too, he even showed up with a Giordana hat.

So, with fresh bike funds in hand I headed south today to grab a Colnago C40 that I had been watching since last year. Told the guy when the Giordana sold I'd be down to get it. This has primarily a Record build on it.

How I brought it home and yes, I do have all the parts to the seatpost. Should be right at 17 lbs even when I put on some pedals and a saddle.

Since I was so far south I went another 15 miles farther after picking up the Colnago to grab this Cilo that was also for sale. Shimano 600 build with Aelle tubing and Mavic MA40 rims on the 6208 hubs. Has some paint blemishes and a couple of chips but the chrome looks good, just dirty. I bet I can polish this one up really nice and then decide on whether to stick with the parts or upgrade. I am thinking of staying with the white finishing bits though to show off the light hue of the frame.

That's a 600 headset on it and a 600 AX stem!

I may have both of these ready for a test ride tomorrow. I just need to ice up the knee before I start working on them. 3 1/2 hours in the jeep to collect these was not very good on the still healing knee.

congrats on both bikes :thumb:the C40 was Johan Museuuw's and the Mapei's favorite bike but equipped with Dura Ace 7700. This generation of Record is nicer than the very last one even though I prefer Shimano by a long country mile but I do like C Record Ergopowers and Ergopowers made until 2002.

Went over the C40 this afternoon and then decided I couldn't wait until tomorrow to take it out. So I got 10 miles in on it. Probably the most I've worked on a ride since the new knee but still really slow. I did bump it up over 20 mph for a couple of miles and it felt great under me. This is probably going to get some Zonda's on it and certainly better tires than the Gatorskins.

Seems almost like an insult to put flat pedals on it but I don't know how long it's going to be before I can start clipping in again.

Seeing a nice bike with flat pedals on it used to elicit a groan and a “C’mon man” under my breath until my knee operation

I was able to clip in comfortably in about three months, and I still do on any road bike and my cross-country mountain bike, But I have been spending a lot of time on a big burly long travel E bike lately and I like riding it unfettered so much that I purchased some very nice Shimano Saint flat pedals for it. Have a pair in the box for the short travel bike also. Kind of refreshing just to go for a quick spin and not having to change clothes to do so

Velo Orange has deep half clips for $7.50. I love these for casual biking, especially for pedals that originally had toe clips with straps.

Interesting that you dislike the Gatorskins, have you thought aboutusing mavic cosmic carbon with us continental grand prix 5000s??

I noticed yesterday how much straighter the repaired leg is while pedaling than the other one. There is a significant difference with the knee to top tube distance on each stroke. The non-repaired knee is pointed out a good bit more and passes the top tube at least a couple of inches farther out on each stroke. Crazy!

They seem to be the main tire I get on the used bikes I pick up. The Cilo has them too. I usually flat less than once I year so I totally prefer good tires like GP 4000s/5000 or Veloflex of some flavor. Heck I have several bikes running tubulars with and without sealant because I enjoy the feel of good rubber on my bikes.

I started going over the Cilo yesterday.

It does have the remains of a Columbus Aelle decal on it. I was expecting the ITM seatpost to be 26.8 but it's a 26.2. The rest of the parts are 600EX items. The crank, FD, headset, pedals, hubs and stem are 6207, The shifters, RD, brake calipers and brake levers are 6208. Not sure yet about the BB but it's got play in it I'll need to deal with.

Weird thing I didn't notice until I was putting it into the car is that the rims are schrader not presta. Going to need to get some of those grommets to correct that most likely.

The saddle is toast and most likely heading for the trash bin. Not sure yet if I'll keep those levers on or go aero. Need to see about some hoods for sure.

I'm thinking white saddle, cable housing, bar tape and hoods on this one right now.

The fork cleaned up very well with intact decals. The decals on the down tube seem ok too but the ones on the seat tube are a mess. I may try and get those off and clean up the adhesive residue. I think this frame is going to get the full 3 stage cutting, polishing, waxing routine to clean it up. I tested just polish on the top tube last night and while it brought back some shine there is more to be had. It may be tricky to preserve the decals though.

I pumped up the tires last night and they did hold air just fine. The Gatorskins on this need to go also. Plenty of room to run large 700 x 25 tires and might even be able to fit 700 x 28's on this.

I don't want to get too carried away with the Cilo as this is more of a rescue, restore, and pass on project. I've got to quit losing hundreds of dollars on these, LOL!

I'm so used to swapping Keo Pedals onto all my rides that I've never serviced any older pedals. Going to need to find instructions on getting into these 6207 pedals and servicing the bearings and then reseting them up with preload or whatever you do with pedals.

Dustcaps came right off the crank, they had grease on them. Good sign!

Thinking about the C40, the tires need an upgrade for sure.

Then I have to decide if I'm sticking with those wheels or upgrading those also. Almost wish I had bought the used Campagnolo C.F. tubulars I saw on sale recently at another site.

It's got a Veloce FD on it. I may see if I have a Record one or the like in my stash.

Then it's just deciding if I stick with that Avocet saddle or not. Not much to do on this one.

Oh, and address the drivetrain noise I heard on and off yesterday. Sort of a knocking sound that came and went. Shifting was a bit lazy so I think I just need to tweak the RD. Need to check the rear freehub too though.

Fit wise I am about 1/2 short on the setback and the reach to the bars is off too. Probably ride as is for now and see how it feels.

Finally got around to addressing the cassette issue on the C40 as I wanted to give it an honest ride today. But in typical senile ol' fool fashion I spent over an hour tearing up the house looking for my Campagnolo cassette tool. Now you'd think it wouldn't be a problem since I have two of them, a large toolbox just for the bike tools, and one room where I normally keep the tools and parts. But nope, nowhere to be found. I finally discovered both of them in the gallon size bag I have were I keep spare skewers, WTH??!!

Any the spacer between the first two cog carriers was on backwards causing too big of a gap between two of the cogs. Fixed that, tweaked the RD and then took it out. Appears to still have about three cogs that must be worn as they are making a knocking noise when I ride them. I'll get a new cassette and chain on this beauty.

The ride itself was good and bad. Yesterday I had done the same route on my old Trek 5200 and to be honest halfway through the ride I was beat up and sore. Every little bump on the Trek just kicked me in the butt and the pedals even with a preferred Fizik Kurve saddle on it. That's why I wanted to take out the C40 on the same route, to do a direct comparison. Without a doubt the Colnago was way more comfortable, even with the less than supple Gatorskin tires on it. The bike truly does ride more like a classic lugged steel frame. I ran a much better avg pace today despite having to fight winds on the way home again. I also bonked at about mile 16 with only water in the bottle so the remaining miles saw no recovery, just me gutting it out.

Anyway, despite being the "Steel is Real" guy I am digging this old Colnago. Fixing the cassette, good tires, maybe some stupid light wheels, etc are all in the future for this one I think. Priority right now though is good wheels for the Krapf bike.

I also would love to add an old Kestrel 200 SCI or similar to the stable to see how it compares to the Colnago, C4 Air One, Y-Foil, and the 5200.

Oh, and my fitness level is still sucking from the total knee replacement. Today's ride hurt and yes it was windy but man that pace today is what I would normally consider a total screw off ride.

This is how the C40 is set up right now. I do like those old Avocet Air saddles. Those flat pedals are just going from bike to bike right now. I'm really tempted to start clipping in again though but it hasn't even been two months from the surgery.

That looks like the old Navigators team color way. I love my 1st Gen C40, have yet to ride a Master, but always imagined that it rides like a “Master in carbon”. They really are nice bikes and a lot of folks will poo poo Colnago for being over rated but the hype IMO on the C40 is real.

Your shot of that particular stretch of fence and the building in the background brings back fond memories of my two family reunion trips to Powder Mountain.
