Give Me The Skinny..................on

Give me the Skinny on Chamois Cream.

Without getting into Too graphic detail, where do you all spread this stuff?
I`m not asking which is the best cream, just where do you all apply it?
The jars are So Small, I`m just thinking if you spread it Everywhere, you`d run out in a week?
I ride two bikes.
A classic Schwinn Passage road/touring bike, and a Trek Verve III.
On my Trek , I`m fine.
On my Schwinn Passage (1985) everything is rubbing and on fire!

It goes in the Chamois Coffee, right?

Iride01 08-17-22 02:07 PM

I don't use it. Never needed it.

If you wear cotton underwear under your bibs or shorts while you ride, you will need a lot of it. Also seems to help if you keep hair down there short and groomed! <grin>

FYI, on the cheap Chicago Schwinn's I had from the 70's all the way up to and including the Varsity, their saddles were crap. Don't know if your Passage is one of those, but that saddle in the pic sure gives me some painful memories.

On yer undercarriage.

Branko D 08-17-22 02:12 PM

I sometimes use it, especially before triathlon (because of salt and everything) or the running bit (again, salt) or if I didn't do a long ride in a while, am going on one, and feel like I could use it just in case. You just use a bit - a dip - and rub a thin layer where the saddle and your bum touches. Don't slather it all around.

If one bike I'm fine and the other is a torture device, probably different saddles?

It's called "chamois cream." You really can't figure out where it goes?

Very few riders still ride real Chamois sewn in their shorts.

So, I know you don`t lather it on you padded biking shorts.

Bosco13 08-17-22 02:59 PM

Well, if you don't ride with shorts with Chamois, why would you want to use Chamois cream? I stopped using it with modern day shorts and see no need to. However, if I did use it I'd probably apply just like I did with Chamois shorts.

I don't know why you bring up the distinction of "real" Chamois, but currently used term for the pad in cycling shorts is Chamois and that doesn't have anything to do with what the material is.

Is it really too difficult to do a quick Google search?

how to apply chamois cream shorts

roadsnakes 08-17-22 03:33 PM

OK

Sorry

I`ve been told I have been insulting.

I`ll just try to figure it our by trial and error.

Chamois Cream

I use chamois cream with modern shorts. I apply to my skin areas that are friction points, and to the liner itself
although they are synthetic these days. I haven’t tried riding without the cream, so maybe I am just wasting my money. I ride 100-150 miles per week in summer, most rides <50 miles. A large tube (8oz?) lasts me about a month in summer, maybe 20 rides? I’d buy a tube or jar and try it out. Some creams come in 2oz packets so maybe buy a sample to try out. Bill

This is pretty much exactly my stance/situation/process. Anything above 10 miles. (have some decent climbs that increases the movement in the saddle). Perhaps I could bump it to 20, but hate to be wrong and pay the price for that.

It's called chamois cream, but you're confused about where to apply it, because shorts don't use actual chamois anymore? Oh my.

Pratt 08-17-22 04:55 PM

Best applied to privates, in private.

veganbikes 08-17-22 05:58 PM

I like Body Glide's Bike Glide and I just apply it to my genital area. I do suffer from chafing so it does help out and the stick based nature means your hands stay clean.

I seem to get diaper rash from cotton. I 'don't if I wear nylon underwear.

Proper shorts or bibs are meant to be worn sans undies those would be your undies but if you are riding just in cotton you will have issues. Cotton holds on to moisture so it is poor for a next to skin layer just about always but especially in high output activities and also quite bad in cold weather. ExOfficio Give N Go undies are the best I have worn and generally what I am commuting in these days for long rides I still wear bib shorts but for short commutes the ExOs are excellent. Moisture wicking is always the key. The longer that moisture stays next to your skin the more likely you will get a rash

Check the label, active ingredient probably dimethicone, Two Toms roll-on or generic dimethicone much more economical.

Why do people start new threads but don’t bother to type in a proper title?

That's the best way. If you don't already have a place in mind where you need it, you may not need it. It reduces chafing in the crotch area but if you aren't having any discomfort you don't need it. If you are, put it on the around the area that gets sore.

mschwett 08-17-22 08:21 PM

for a ride over 40 miles i put a relatively small amount on the place where the top of the inside thigh meets the part which isn't the leg, on each side. that's the only place i've ever had a little irritation, probably from the edge of saddles which aren't quite exactly the right shape. i do not apply it to my butt or anywhere "else."

livedarklions 08-18-22 04:51 AM

Next up: where do you apply underarm deodorant?

Kai Winters 08-18-22 05:53 AM

I prefer Noxema...as Chris Horner says, it feels tingly.
I apply it where my inner thighs meet the torso.
Generally you apply it to the chamois itself along the edges where the chamois joins the shorts at the sides. It's to prevent chafing.
If you prefer not to wear cycling shorts then you are on your own to find a method that works.

Rolla 08-18-22 11:21 AM

I use Chamois Butt'r. It comes in a large tube that lasts quite a while. You can apply it to your skin or to the chamois itself. I limit the distribution to the areas where chaffing might be an issue:
