Been thinking about mud flaps lately. Went with a friend to Lowe’s and while in the plumbing section ran across these 6”X6” rubber squares. A dollar or two, 1.5mm or 3mm thick. Thought I would experiment.

made a pattern and cut on out. Looks like it would be a good item to use to keep the rain and mud off our machines. I plan on having an old headbadge riveted to some for my projects.

What, the color? I'd love to have that thing. Motobecane also made a 27" wheeled Nobly 3-speed (Sturmey) in yellow.

Same colour as the 70’s Sprite 27’s, just a lot brighter! How could the cars miss that?

Damn, I wish that was closer. I'd jump on it in a heartbeat. Never saw one in yellow, I thought the ivory ones were rare enough.

Got in a good test ride today and I have to say it has potential. Usual things like brake, saddle and shift cable adjustments to make. I will say that the original Chen XXXX tires ruin the ride feel. Skinny and hard make for a jarring trip. The hub is shifting sluggish due to the grease diet it seemed to be on. Quite a few aluminium parts were put in use for the build.

If it stays I will replace the rims and handle bars with alloy as well. All the fender and chainguard bolts were replaced with SS ones and lock nuts for rattle free rides. The rear stays were also bent back into their proper shape. The coffin reflected was switched for a SA Lucas unit. Tin shiftplate took the place of the missing one. It was fun to work on!

I had one just like it back in the late 70's.
I had a newpaper route at the time and they required the bike to bright yellow, most kids just took a spray can to what ever bike they had. I went looking for a cheap bike, and found the yellow Raleigh Sports. It even had two huge saddle baskets and a double stacked newsboy size front basket set up. The guy who had it before me had moved from the city and had been using it to deliver packages and groceries with for two years. I think I gave $20 for it back then.
The guy had two super heavy duty tires, both with thorn resistant tubes and he had glued in leather strips inside the tires as well. He had both wheels respoked with 12ga spokes too. I used it for at least two years, mostly as my winter bike. I parked it when one of the rear seat stays cracked near the dropout It didn't fail completely but I had been noticing rust bleeding down the yellower paint from what looked like a scratch in the tube, then one day that scratch had a piece of cloth stuck in it, it had apparently been opening up while stopping with all the weight on the bike, and had pinched a piece of the outer casing of a bungee cord I had tied to it there that held the pepers forward in the rear baskets as I rode.
I brazed the crack up but never trusted it after that with all the weight of delivering papers. I delivered about 250 papers,and on coupon days, the thin paper swelled to 1' thick pile of ads and coupons meaning the bike was loaded to the max.
The only failure the bike ever had was the cracked frame, and somewhere along the line, I changed out the saddle when the old one split in the middle. .
On snowy days that bike would be covered in inches of ice and snow after a several hour delivery route in the snow or freezing rain.

Had some time today so rode the new Raleigh through the large housing area I live in. Having shifting issues with 3rd gear fine, 2nd disconnecting and 1st feeling like 2nd. Grease will have to be flushed.

If you can get a pulley for the shift cable and mount it on the seat tube, the cable will be more free (better shifting). It will also not require as much adjustment if you move the wheel to compensate for the chain wearing.

Looks beautiful. I too hate grease in an aw hub. I flush with wd40 usually.

This does have a full SA set up including the pulley. It’s just mounted at the base of the seat tube. Thought about moving it up but want to solve the grease sludge in the hub first.

First part of the project complete!

Next part will be the holes drilled into the front guard then marked, flap punched. Mounting will use rivets as well. The red 79 “Roadster” will be the wearer.

Hey 3speedslow - just what do you mean by "Grease will have to be flushed"
What is involved with this maintenance task? Do you take the hub apart?

The PO, previous owner used a grease gun to lube the rear hub which is a no-no. To flush the hub you can take the wheel off the bike , remove the rod then through the cap squirt an appropriate fluid which will remove the sludge. Afterwards you put back the oil which the hub needs.

Thanks! When I get some matching paint for the frame scrapes I will paint the rivets on the fenders.

Usually when I find one like that I just pull the hub apart and go through it completely.
It saves surprises later down the road and isn't that hard to do. I've found quite a few broken pawl springs, stuck pawls, and bad bearing surfaces just doing a simple tear down and reassemble.
At 40+ years old, it certainly can't hurt anything.

I thought that you were doing both fenders.
