Stainless spokes, yes. While you're at it, get some aluminum CR18 rims.

An LED bulb may be an improvement, but I think you should still get a regulator. If you really plan to ride this bike at night, I would recommend a modern light. You can drive a Busch & Müller light with an old Dynohub. They have regulators built in, and I haven't heard of anyone blowing one of these out at high speed.

Anyone care to posit an age for this Sports? I can't find any images of that swan's head stem (probably called something different by the cognoscente.) And what's up with the chaincase? Someone get tired of oiling through the pedal port, or did some versions come bobbed like that? [Edit: now I see that the rear lower inspection port is just missing.] Another white-flagged rear mudguard - looks like it had the flap.

This is near me and I may go look at it. Rear Dynohub supposedly still lights the front and rear (seatstay mounted) lights. Not my photo.

The frame mounted guide wheel generally dates it to pre TI (1960 or earlier) but there's no saying how long these frames lasted into 1961. The shape of the head lug puts it after 1954 but I can't see the top tube joint to either the head tube or seat tube which could narrow it down some. For a few years in the mid 50s the lugs looked like this.

That does narrow it down. I'm going to call it 1958-1960 with a small chance it reaches into 1961. But this bike qualifies as a pre-TI in my book.

Picked up this black B66 at the Canadian Vintage Bicycle Show with its original box. A nice new double rail saddle for $75 (clamp included) Interesting to note the copper rivets and different font with England on the rear of the saddle. This one is destined for Sir Wayes A. Tonne and its' current newish B67 will move to the Root Beer Sports in the future. It looks unused and I assume it to be of '90s vintage?

Thanks as always BigChief. Any comments on the stem? Seems to me there was a thread outside of this one talking about a particular stem that was only used for one or two years, but now I can't find it and I may have made the whole thing up....sigh...age.

Doesn't appear to be a Raleigh stem. Looks like somebody wanted the bars higher than the original would allow. Still, you always want to keep the expander below the threaded section of the fork tube. Sometimes people get carried away and adjust the stem too high, but this looks like a extra length stem to me.

My wag is early 50s. Date code on the hub, probably concealed by OEM grease, will tell the tale.

Most of the seat tube and downtube decals, which would help nail down the age, are not visible.

"Was" being the key word. I believe it is now owned by Selle (Italy).

Great picture. It looks so similar to the BMW headlights with wedged pin key of the day but it's odd to imagine English and German designers copying each other in 1938.

Back in the day, we used to call those chicken head knobs. Old guitar amps had them. The rotary pickup selector switch on my Kay Value Leader was a chicken head. Ahhhh memories

Kurt Kaminer's "The Headbadge" shows the bike as ca. 1958-60 based on the seat tube decals. If I make it down to look at the bike I'll check the SA hub.

I've noticed that these sort of interests cross paths a lot. To me it seems natural that someone who appreciates old English 3 speeds would also enjoy things like this old Harmony/Silvertone. I still have the Danelectro short horn I bought at a pawn shop in 1969. And the Kay...and a Harmony...and a beat Teisco Del Rey for that Hound Dog Taylor sound!!

True! A friend of mine has a workshop where he brings all sorts of vintage electrical things back to life. Similar to my old roadster hobby in many ways. You get to be part technician and part historian. It is a very satisfying feeling to bring some neglected piece of the past back to usefulness especially when you have to solve puzzles along the way. This hobby blends in perfectly with my natural love of cycling.
