With our dyno hubs, the hub spins coils of wire around a fixed magnet inducing a current. In the picture, it appears there's something high speed spinning with the axle (magnets?) and the coils are fixed in place. You can see a blue blur in the somewhat empty middle.

How did I do? (calling electrical engineers...)

It doesn't matter which spins- the magnets or the armature. Either way current is induced in the wire.

Alex Moulton invented this small wheel commuter bicycle in 1962 in England.
This is a early example of one of his bikes, hard to find and collectible. Ready to ride.

Had a Twenty pop up on the local CL. Pic won't load but it would be a rust project for sure. Looks complete but strangely the owner won't say a price..

I've found that when the "seller" won't state a price then they are running a silent auction trying to be clever and thinking they have something worth much more than it usually is. Offer $500, see what they say, then say no thanks because you found a better one for free in your cousin's chicken coop.

You make it sound so simple but some of those business parks are HUGH! I bet it was a nice ride.

I got a chuckle out of that. The ad had most every word misspelled and so did the email replies. I got the feeling like they really thought they had struck gold with this English bike. I will still ask them again and see if they respond.

I passed a pile of bike parts about a mile from home yesterday so (naturally) I stopped for a little look see. Extracted a Raleigh-built girl's Armstrong, complete but for wheels and chain.

It's a little strange, though. Standard Raleigh frame, fenders, stem, handlebar, crank, chain guard; but no serial number and no brakes. No cables of any kind. Must have been a coaster brake one-speed. 18" frame. The remains of a low end Idéale saddle were included, the nose hardware missing.

Anyone have an EA3 / 650a coaster brake wheel you want to be rid of?

@rhm, I think some Malaysia-made bikes lacked serial numbers.

A perimeter lap is about 3.5 miles. I usually take walks and by taking different roads I can do loops anywhere from a mile to 3+ miles. Garmin shows today's average speed around 12.4 mph with a max speed of 17.4 mph, I never really got into 3rd gear. Nice change from walking. I'm thinking of extending a ride tomorrow to connect to the local MUP during lunch. I'll have to bring my helmet in so I'll have a mirror, and will need to raise the seat a bit higher (hopefully the seatpost is long enough).

12.86 mile lunchtime ride today ending in a little rain. Escaped from the business park and rode a section of the Oak Leaf trail.

There is this 1968 Raleigh DL-1 24 inch that I want to purchase for $175. I am fairly new to this market and was wondering if this price seems bad? The market that I am in has them priced out at $300+ in great condition. This one has rust on the chain guard and some on the rims. I honestly think it might be a little too big (I am 5"8') but I am either expecting to flip it or restoring it and putting it on my wall.

Short segment of today's ride, handheld phone recording, listening to all the clicks and clanks and rattles. I don't recall if other 3-speeds I've had sounded like this.

@Flog00 I saw the star on those hub nuts on PG's Norman Rapide. It was on the bolt atop the GB stem.

This early 60's Rudge frame will be my 3 speed drop bar conversion choice. It came to me all original and as a 10 speed. The spacing in the rear is already close to what an SA needs.

Since I have had this, it has stayed as a 10 speed, gone to a 5 speed and spent a little time as a single speed. Time for it to enjoy the gentlemanly 3 speed style.

I have a 59' SA hub coming from @clubman plus a few helpful bits to help the project along. Can't wait!

While I wait, i worked up the ERD of the 27" Dunlop rim and measurement of an SA hub. Plugged those numbers into a few sites and came up with the spoke length. Went to the spoke box and got lucky, plenty of stainless spokes to do the 40 hole hub. Ready when it arrives...

I think it will be too, thanks! Really love the maroon that Rudge used. It is not a high end frame or tubing.it is 2030 tubing Raleigh used this frame for its model Royal I believe. It's a nice rider so knew it would be a good candidate for the conversion. The hard part of the project will be to take two broken 50's era shifters and make one work.

I look forward to having some nice fall rides on this.

Lovely bike. I'd say it's the Rudge clone of a '62 Gran Sport with GB Coureur 66's, Dunlop Special Lightweights etc.
The workmanship that went into these hi tensile frames were just great back then.

My thinking as well. I have one of those 62 Gran Sports as well. They both share many of the same components but the Raleigh of course got just another level up from the Rudge. The GB brakes are the same but different, the Dunlops are the same but different, both saddles are Brooks but different, both were 10 speeds but different manufactures.

FYI...Ran across something on YouTube last night. Everyone is familiar with the transportation boards film " Cyclist Special " but there is a similar film which has the out takes from the film and a lot of the snips that made it.

Attachment 576658The neighbor a block over had this sitting along side his house and offered $10 when finally asked him about its future he said sold! It is in almost new condition 1986-10 on the TWC-111 3 speed SA coaster brake hub. The front hub says Phillips It has pedals made in Germany Mesinger seat says USA-? The sticker on the headset-? There is a general lack of decals and the paint is real close to perfect. I don't suspect repaint. Every indication points toward a Phillips as the chainguard says. Nothing too special here but Someone will enjoy it. Serial # 84264 at seat post lug with a "D" under the #. Whats the "H" decal on the fork headset?

This Raleigh is my winter restoration project. Restoration because of the repaint done about 1970 and because of wrong pedals and rear fender. Very good otherwise. Single speed. I couldn't find the serial number in any of the suggested places. you can see where it is,where the top tube plugs into the seat tube on the left side.
It is not a 1900 Raleigh
I am inclined, with your opinions and knowledge notwithstanding, to call it a 1959 Dawn Tourist.

Sheldon says Raleigh reused serial number on some 60's and 70's frames.
This bottom bracket has an oiler. Discontinued 1960?ish
Bike had 1959 State bicycle license plate attached when purchased at yard sale in 2000.
So maybe---maybe not.
