Slept in again on this rest week, now my 2 hr ride before work will be 60-90min, depending.
I'm going camping this weekend and will not log any bike time over S/Su, but will do a couple good hikes. I will log less total time on the bike this week than my Sunday ride last week. I know it's a rest week for me but it just feels... weird. I'm slightly guilty already. Next week will be the usual, but attenuated by 0.66 or 0.75, as we have training camp over F/S/Su. |
Doing a pre race openers type thing to keep legs turning over, like 2hrs.
|
Skipped my commute since it was 31 out. Not sure if thats a valid reason, since it typically doesn't get that cold. Is going down from ice on the road a concern at those temps?
|
Yes, if there has been recent precipitation or runoff. You can pretty much always see the shiny spots before you come up on them though. Be cautious descending or coming up to corners. If you do hit ice DO NOT hit the brakes, your wheels will lock up and you will fall over; try to go in a straight line and more often than not you will stay upright.

I suppose, but it's just another road hazard, like a branch in the road or whatever. Keep an eye out and you will be fine. I rode over a lot of ice the other day. It's better to ride around it if you can, but if you can't avoid it, don't panic, just keep rolling straight over it and you'll be fine. Must.. not.. make fun of Californians... |
hahaha... 31 must be balmy for you GC!
|
Yeah, if it warms up to 31 I might go for a ride.
|
i tend to crash on ice about once a year. it sucks, a lot. one of the reasons I opt to ride inside these days when the roads are messy.

Thanks everyone, now I can file skipping this ride under: Valid Excuse.
Hill repeats tonight. |
*in California

If pro bike handler cyclocross master mikey868 crashes on the ice 1 time a year, that's probably 1 time a day for me!
In a few months, I'll be out when its 108! |
2 hrs ride with 20 minute 90% ftp.. lots of water on the road but beautiful day
|
Fixed gear Friday:
1:45 of unstructured (mostly Z2). |
Yesterday: jumps. Today: 2x20s.
It's weird how the exact same workout can be easy sometimes and hard sometimes. Yesterday and today were easy. |
today pulled the easy-day race ride for a bit then at the halfway separated off and did tempo back. avg about 240 for 1:20.
|
Z1 days sometimes just turn into just dance party days. very likely to go over zone. but the trade off is finding all kinds of pre-race tracks.
|
The weather radar looked clear, the roads were dry so I headed out this am. About 10 minutes into my ride, the rain found me :( Cold and wet, did 90 minutes. This week was a wash out but great timing for a rest, race season starts in a week or so but I probably won't race until the end of January.
It looks to be cold but dry this weekend. Looking forward to riding! |
The rain finally let up this morning so I finally got in a ride. 3.5 hours and 5000 feet on the way to work. I dont think it was below freezing, but there were still bits of ice up in the hills.
|
Thursday, rode 2.5 more hours on spin bike, and today/Friday, 2 hours on spin bike in the morning, and 2 hours up & down hiking in Waimea Canyon.
@cmh - I drove in/out the entire way up Waimea Canyon road to the trail at 3500 feet. Oh my goodness, that would have been an amazing ride for the bike!!!! On the way up, it just kept going up, and up, and up, and.... |
1:45 after work. finally got a decent headlight that shines something meaningful on the ground, so the last hour or so was at night.
|
Easy hour last night on zwift. Been working a lot this last week and usually I would skip riding...but I don't want to let that be the reason I don't ride. So I at least did something.

Wisdom teeth came out thursday, and haven't ridden since Wednesday night (60min at 60-95% FTP). Seeing as how I am really not in a lot of pain, I going to try for a fixed gear spin on the rollers. Not sure how the antibiotics will affect me, but we'll find out
|
it's friggin winter and all i need to maintain my goddam sanity is riding outside on the weekends so of course it's raining...dammit. not even pretty to look at like snow.
shooting for 2.5 hours on the rollers with 3*20s. |
Gonna do like 2.5-3hrs of JRA whenever I drag my ass out the door. 93.1 + 0.8 before today's bike games.
|
Sparsely attended team cross ride. We heard the trails were clear but they really weren't. Lots and lots of ice. Probably 30 minutes of the 2 hour ride was on ice, including some climbing which was interesting. You get used to riding on ice pretty quickly. I thought of @furiousferret.

Did 4x up the "Tunnel Climb" in Zion National Park yesterday. Smoked the driver's side mirror of a California-registered SUV that was BACKING UP AROUND THE INSIDE of a switchback on one of the descents. It appeared that the driver wanted to get a better view of one of the large rock outcroppings.
Very happy I didn't a) run straight into the back of the SUV and b) there was no one in the oncoming lane. I was very much in control but was not expecting someone to be stopped in the middle of a blind, downhill, right hand switchback, let alone for them to be backing up. |
Jeebus. Could have been ugly.
|
3x15' @ 90%, 1:45 on the trainer for 100 TSS.
|
damn, duke, glad you're alright.
finished my workout as planned. interestingly, strava ranks the "suffer score" as higher than some of my longer outdoor rides. not sure if that means anything at all, but it's interesting. |
Threw 7 sprints into my easy z2 ride and broke my old wattage ceiling 3x (1200+w) along with my previous 5sec peak each time. This was entirely out of left field because I've been doing endurance crap for the past 2 months without a ton of real intensity. I'm hoping that with some of the targeted work in this upcoming block I can hit 1300.
