What's the point?

I assume you are talking about the Giro shoe.

Maybe the design is to get around patents that other shoe companies use. I agree it is complicated and also ugly with the two dangling straps.

Saw this from the Paralympics.

How many spokes are on that front wheel?!

How well do you think it would handle under a 200lb sprinter going 75km/h in the bends?

Maybe tweet to her and ask her here: https://twitter.com/AlydaNorbruis

I think it's a stupid design. There's little velcro to secure the laces, so if you have narrow feet, can you trim the laces down to make sure that enough of the velcro still engages? At least with most velcro straps you can trim the overhang and still have a decent amount of interface. How do you swap out the lace/strap if you damage the lace?

My guess is that it's one of those, "We gotta make something 'new' every year so let's throw something together." type of things.

Cycling shoes are a mature system. They've been around for a long time. There is only so much you can do to improve them.

On the other hand, if you offer the same shoes for several years and the other guy is offering the "X-9000 shoes with Xylophan Carbon Nanomachine Technology", then you know a significant number of people will buy from the other guy. The cycling economy is based on that.

Proof: Put the average local/regional crit racer on some above average equipment from 15 years ago (like 105) and their performance will not decline.

New USA men's hour record set by Tom Zirbel
Zirbel sets new US Hour Record | Cyclingnews.com

Beat most of the recent hour record holders except Wiggins. But Zirbel's attempt was at 1,888 metres elevation.

taras0000 09-16-16 04:39 PM

Too bad for the timing. If he had the condition to do it last year his mark would've got him a World Hour Record notation. Still an exceptional performance for Tom! Congrats on a well deserved mark.

Vincent McGee has pix of the wheel on his Instagram, I'm sure he'd be happy to answer questions.

Can you link me to the right instagram account? I searched for Vincent McGee and couldn't find one that looked cycling-related.

I know someone posted about the Revolution Series on FB live, but you can replay it as well. Great way to spend a lazy Sunday!

I'll be interested to hear reactions when someone gets their hands on Vittoria's new track tires:

They talk about everything but what the pressure ratings are. That's kind of an important spec.

The construction doesn't suggest they should be much different than current tires. And clinchers won't go above about 130psi because the rim design can't handle it.

I'm more interested in independent substantiation of the rolling resistance and durability. But I'm happy to see that they're continuing to invest in updating track tires.

Some clincher rims are designed for higher pressures. I ran my clincher set-up for the past three years at 140-145psi: Deep V rims and Vredestein Fortezza SL tires.

I'd probably do the same thing if both the rim and tire are rated for it....

Veloflex Record Clincher max 145 psi
Vittoria Open Corsa G+ : 145 PSI

and

Conti Grand Prix Supersonic: 170 PSI

In light of stats like the above, I contacted Velocity (the rim maker) and asked them about high pressures in tires. The tech rep said something to the effect of, "The rim can handle any pressure the clincher is rated for."

I ran 160psi in my Tufo Tubular-Clinchers (which is a closed tubular with a bead attached). They are rated for up to 175PSI as well.

1) I wonder if Velocity as a company would want to adopt that position, if they understood that potentially means 175 psi and they're dependent on someone else's specifications. You got a tech's (hopefully informed) response, not an engineering specification.

2) Not everyone is going to use Deep Vs.

3) No surprise tire makers would see a competitive advantage to advertising higher pressures - they're not on the hook if the rim fails. What matters is the lesser of the tire and rim.

4) But most importantly, I worry that not everyone will treat something they read here about tire pressure as specific to a certain track wheel setup. A number of Mavic and Zipp clinchers (including the comete road, super-9, 404, 808...) are rated for 110-125 psi. There is an aviation saying about operating an aircraft outside of its limitations: you may get away with it, but you should understand that you're now an unpaid test pilot.

If you're just trying to construct a specific exception to what I wrote, go ahead and have at it. But if by posting a bunch of tire specs and relating a conversation you mean for people to generalize that it's okay to just blindly pump clinchers up to the tire's max pressure, it's bad advice.

Really, man?

Poppit 09-21-16 05:58 AM

We use the Vittoria Diamante Pro Pista Clincher tyre on our training wheels and pump them up to approx. 10 bar which is 145psi which I thought was the max psi that is printed on it, I'll check tonight. Wiggle seem to think so too, Wiggle | Vittoria Diamante Pro Pista (Track) Clincher Tyre | Road Race Tyres

Quote: The new Pista Control is an endurance track tire with a strong 290 TPI Corespun tubular or open tubular casing, also suitable for rougher (outdoor) track surfaces like concrete. The Graphene-enhanced compound in its modern, asymmetric tread pattern delivers speed and grip in specifically in the riding direction.

I like the innovative design of this uni-directional tire.
