I just pulled the trigger on this Competizione today

eBay Competizione,

and I wonder if the consensus is that I got a good deal. I wasn't seriously looking, but this popped up in my size, and it appears to only be missing stem and bars to be complete. The seller said he posted it a couple of weeks ago at $250 and had no movement, so he lowered it to $100 + shipping for a quick sale. He got one.

What would something like this have sold for back when it was new? I feel like this data point might help me justify the purchase with my wife...

Agreed, it's circa 1983-1984 and appears to be Miyata sourced. The serial number will corroborate the year and manufacturer. I'm not surprised at the failure to sell at $250. Most buyers doe not want a project bicycle and the project buyers typically want just a frame, so they build their own vision with minimal expenditure. This one has obviously been frankenbiked to an extent, based on the Modolo levers. The Aerox crankset and distinctive AGC300 brakes are correct but I'm not sure about the derailleurs. I typically see this model with Superbe Pro. The Cyclone equipped model during this era was typically the Gran Premio.

I don't have any 1983-1984 prices for the Competezione but I'd estimate $550-$600, given that the one step lower Gran Premio sold for $470 and $520 in 1983 & 1984, respectively. I'd say that you got a good but not not great deal, once you factor in the $100 shipping cost.

Ah, the sobering voice of T-Mar. I appreciate your knowledge base with these Japanese bikes. As far as the frankened aspect -- would the Superbe Pro have ever been matched with Suntour Symmetric shifters? I thought these were typically mated to the Cyclone MKII derailleurs. The downtube clearly has a single mounting bolt-type boss, so I suspect the Symmetrics are stock. Does that support the possibility that the Cyclones are also stock?

I don't have any counterpoint on the Moldolo levers. Those just look out of place...

I found a couple of references to the original drivetrain possibly being the Cyclones. There is a flickr page, where the owner says it is "original," though it's only the owner's word here.

As I stated earlier, I wasn't sure about the derailleurs but I've dug a little more and found that Superbe Pro derailleurs were spec'd in 1984, while the full Superbe Pro group was spec'd in 1985. While I couldn't find any 1983 Lawee issued literature to determine the OEM derailleurs, the extant samples you found certainly support that possibility. Once you receive the bicycle,comparing the serial number with the derailleur date codes will provide further evidence on whether or not the derailleurs are OEM.

Regarding the shift levers, the 1984 Competezione used Superbe Pro derailleurs with an unspecified top mount mount shift lever set and the Symmetric were SunTour's only top mount shift levers at the time, unless you stepped down to the low end Trimec shifters. So, the presence of Symmetric levers is not necessarily indicative of OEM Cyclone derailleurs.

Univega branded bikes are solid well built machines. That looks like one of the better ones.

So, I got a little worried that the stem and bars were removed because of damage, but it looks like the previous owner had upgraded and mounted some nifty Nitto aero bits. Seller is selling these separately, but I'm more than happy with the portion of the bike that I am receiving (tomorrow, according to FedEx). Standard stem and bars are fine for me.
