Anyone on the forum with huge bike collections?

I’m talking like 50+ bikes or close to that number. Crazy 🤪 bike people? Love to see some pictures

john m flores 12-05-23 08:52 AM

I'm more of a hoarder than a collector. Would love to see some well-curated and maintained collections!

Wildwood 12-05-23 09:12 AM

The most I ever had road ready was only about half your stated goal. By C&V standards not exactly ‘well curated’. The vintage all Euro, brifter bikes by smaller American builders.

I like to see collections, too.. But how to picture groups of 10+ bikes well?
A smattering...1959-1987 represented

AustroDaimler (2), Batavus, Bianchi, Bottecchia, Carlton, DeRosa, Falcon, Harding (Holdsworthy), Mondia, Pinarello, Rickert. Tubulars are a thing.

Impressive collection! To answer your question, I say you need a long wall and multiple sets of wall mounts, e.g.: Lezyne Stainless Pedal Hook | RA Cycles

Then install your bikes 3 rows high and however many columns. So yes, this would look best for displaying bikes in multiples of 3.

Wildwood 12-05-23 10:57 PM

SoSmellyAir - sometimes smaller groupings are better. Merckx and Zeus did not fit in the (fuzzy) pic above.

or individually, .....the Frejus was left out, too. But for as hard as I tried to make it fit, it deserved to be left out.

Did I say they were not well curated? Only fun riders, or maybe only fun to assemble (twice).

Camilo 12-06-23 12:29 AM

Ask the question on the Classic and Vintage forum. 50 is just getting started there.;)

100bikes 12-06-23 03:29 AM

My tag is 100bikes.

I'm down to about 75 right now.

Just closed the warehouse and moved to much smaller storage,
so no real organization and photos aren't possible now.

Bicycles are my thing- business(career), rider (recreational), collector (it's a bad habit) and swap guy too!

I also collect bicycle books, and have for many years. Most(95%) of the books in the photo are bicycle related titles.
My estimate is about 1200 bicycle related books, with very few "best rides in..." types.
Its a bad habit ias well, but they take up a lot less space.

The hunter/gatherer gene is often expressed in bizarre ways in modern society. Particularly so when it is not constrained by some rational moderating override.

Wildwood 12-06-23 09:13 AM

Hunter gatherer my azz. We are minor mechanics and re-users. Sustainability experts.
If ever there was a healthy, beneficial hobby worth pursuing, it has to be = I want to ride them all.

Gone in the last 15 months = AD, Bottecchia, Carlton, Falcon, Follis, Frejus, Merckx, Pinarello, Rickert, Zeus. Only added 2.

But I would agree that if one's 'bike project list' exceeds the number of complete riders - hoarding or procrastination may be an issue.

Lamont Cobb 12-10-23 04:52 PM

Did OP mean "huge bike collection" as in a collection of gigantic bikes, or a large collection of normal size bikes?

Wildwood 12-10-23 10:04 PM

Covered

Thank you!

My wife thinks I am nuts because I have 6.

98.7% of the population would agree with your wife. Being a connoisseur of fine two-wheeled human-powered vehicles is not without its crosses to bear. Such are the travails of the righteous.

MarcusT 12-11-23 11:19 PM

I was on my way to building it up, then when I could not enter my storage room because of all the bikes, I decided to start cutting down

Maelochs 12-13-23 06:57 AM

I don't have any huge bikes. I have six or eight normal-sized bikes.

base2 12-13-23 09:34 AM

My wife said to me after I had put a deposit down on a new custom frame: " I don't understand. Don't you already have a project bike?"

I was like: "Sure. That's a drop bar mountain bike. The custom is an all-road, anywhere, big tire, gravel bike. Big difference."

And then she replied: "Ok. Sure." and let it slide.

Mine too, I only have 8, and she hates it, but puts up with it.

You think that's bad, at one time I had 5 classic American cars, she didn't like that either, and they weren't even kept at our house!! I sold all those about 5 years ago because my friend that had a climate control pole barn for his 21 cars and mine, died, so all of his cars and mine got auctioned off because I had no place to put mine, or even one of them, and his wife couldn't maintain the cars, so bye bye classic cars. Before that collection I had 3 British sports cars and 1 Italian sports car, she didn't like those either, I sold those off because they were money pits which was another reason she didn't like them except for the 85 Alfa Romeo Spider that one was pretty reliable and not a money pit. Those foreign cars I kept at our other house that had 4 car garage, the one we have now is only a 2 car garage which is why I had to sell off all those cars. Now I'm thinking of getting another Alfa because it can fit in the garage along with our car and have plenty of space left over, any one of the American cars would have been too wide to fit comfortably with a second car next to it.

georges1 12-23-23 05:42 AM

I must have 11road bikes (9 road frames projects plus 2 bikes that need upgrades), 1 Hybrid (which will be upgraded), 8 mountain bikes(4 mountain bikes plus 4 mountain bike projects). My road frames are all 56cm-57cm frames except opne and my MTB are all 26'inch wheeled from size 20-21 except one.

Chuck Naill 12-23-23 06:02 AM

It is one thing for one person to have 7 bikes and a family of seven to have seven bikes.

base2 12-23-23 08:02 AM

What about 7 people and 1 bicycle?

Better than being the village bicycle?

SJX426 12-26-23 10:17 AM

I have a small collection of 16. 6 are Italians. 1 is French. The rest are mostly American labels, Treks (2), Specialized (3), and Burley. Look left under Bikes.
I have had to introduce them in a stealthy way because of the rath of my wife. Currently she doesn't know about one which is a frame only waiting for an alone day to extract the frozen seat post. The De Rosa was hidden for almost a year, then hung with the rest for several months before being identified! No +0 bikes.
This sounds and is terrible to a good relationship, but she just doesn't get it and hasn't for 48 years. Oh and 3 bikes are "hers," and one is ours (tandem). One of hers she bought in 1973 when we were dating, Raleigh Gran Prix mixite.
I made sure we included a 3rd car garage to accommodate my needs. It has reached and some would say is over capacity to the point where one bike is in my office. She doesn't like that either.
What she does like, upon rare occasion, is to go for a ride. We purchased a NordicTrack cycle which she uses nearly every day and loves the different parts of the world the rides take her.
Oh, this is supposed to be about a huge collection! To her "ours" is a huge collation not to mention all the parts and the influx of more occasionally.
No great presentation either, I like to ride and own them for what they are. None are pristine. All show ownership scares.

If you want to see collections, go to C&V. There are several threads that start with "show me your whatever"

Pratt 12-27-23 02:45 PM

I have a small collection (2) of normal sized, not huge, bikes.
