It seems like 25 mm is now the smallest tire size I see most people using. Does anyone even use 700x23 tires? Any benefits of using such thin tires with all the focus on lower pressures these days?

As many have said, Waterford and Gunnar are good options. Buy a used bike or frame and upgrade -- I got a great Waterford for $800 used and have been upgrading components. Or consider a Rivendell.

Doesn't look like the steering tube is bent -- and the crown race does look like it has moved. I don't have the tools to remove it but am going to take it to LBS this week to check out the alignment.

I never had this problem till I recently put silicone tape on a friend's bike. The better bar end plugs from nitto sound like they will solve the issue.

don't turn beyond 45 but with everything apart it seems like a good time to address the rubbing -- from the evidence on the steerer tube it does seem like it's the top of the race -- they line up...
