You are completely misunderstanding the issue...

You are completely misunderstanding the issue here. No one is talking about rebuilding a wheel. The OP needs to find the Shimano spline freehub or 'driver' for his hub and install it. That is all.

A spare wheelset is more useful when it includes a spare cassette, rotors, and tires. You can always add these things later, but I'd be budgeting for them now (if you weren't already).

Maybe degreaser is too harsh. I use a dab of dish washing soap in a chain cleaner with water followed by a rinse with just water then wipe dry and lube. Some degreasers weaken the chain

I don't think I would do it. I clean my chain with Kerosene. It removes the grease and is suppose to protect it too. Then, I oil it with Pro Gold. Always worked for me.
