Try a straightened metal coat hanger..... Not ideal, but an alternative approach is to use cable clamps and run housing all the way from the brake lever to the caliper.

I bought them off Ebay just for the look for ~$25 each. I wanted all white and there wasn't a lot to choose from. That said I was quite satisfied with them.

I've used them since 2007. I rebuilt the right and later replaced with new, and recently bought new left to install. I don't think they are especially long-term reliable so suggest buying new.
