Never used it / needed it. Hot water should suffice. For deeper cleaning, I soak mine in fuel for a few hours and then in degreaser. It comes out looking like new.

Black objects absorb more heat that's for sure, but I am not sure if you can actually notice the difference when pedaling on a bike in movement since the wind dissipates a lot of it.

It's a good thing to finish cleaning your chain with alcohol, it will remove some unwanted stuff that the degreaser didn't.

2 single sided PM (Stages or 4IIII for instance) could be another option...

Never been an issue to me. I wear 54-59cm helmets as well. I have 2 caps and they are both very thin. I barely notice the difference when I'm wearing one.

The RS500s are 50$ cheaper than the R550s according to my LBSs. It is a significant price difference.

The RS500 seem to be Shimano's entry level SPD-SL pedals whilst the R550 are a slight upgrade.
