I'm a recent convert to upright riding and touring. It solves a lot of problems. You'll have a lot fewer aches and pains and will probably enjoy the ride more. But you'll be slower, guaranteed.

I run a Surly SS middle chainring on my Trek 520. I can honestly say that it lasts easily 3x as long as an aluminum chainring. I've never had a problem with shifting with bar ends.

Definitely agree with this. Going to a very upright riding style will probably do much more to save your back than anything else. Think cruiser bars, adjustable or long stem, lower saddle, etc.

I don't understand this thread. I toured through the Rockies in Sept/Oct and thought it was great. Sure, the weather was occasionally chilly, especially the nights, but the traffic was much lighter.
