Cottered cranks are much maligned IMO. Come on, it's just a tiny 9 or 9.5mm cotter! As a last resort I use a BIG bench vise, they always come out that way (but that needs an assistant though).

Thanks! The wood was recycled from a broken bench, so I don't know what it is. It's medium hard and has a nice grain. Finish is linseed oil.

I don't overthink it. On my commuter with VP City pedals I use any shoe/sneakers except leather sole ones - even Dr. Martens. Never had any problems, wet or dry.
