I had the same problem. I used a hair dryer instead of boiling water, and a couple of c-clamps and rulers instead of the crescent wrench. I skipped the glue. Seems to be working fine.

I can't speak to the 4-speed, but the X-RF5 (w) 5-speed is a real pain in the butt to adjust. Works pretty well once it's adjusted, but on the whole I wouldn't recommend it.
