The VAR cable & housing cutter is what I've used in the past without much fuss. Put a scrap piece of inner cable inside the housing when you cut it to prevent it from squishing and cut quickly.

It's basically a copy of the Campy Nuovo Record and there's nothing overly awkward about it, you just need to tighten the bolts from the top using a 10mm wrench.

That chain is the only one I've ever broken. It had about two miles on it and one of the side plates split in half while climbing a hill.
