I have the same frame in aluminum (Vitesse), and it's almost like new, has no play, after 11 years of almost daily riding through NYC pot holes. (Not folded daily; knock on wood!)

I agree, but with a Dahon Vitesse or Mariner, you can have that, with a better design, time proven production, and probably at lower weight.

I'm using it with a 26 pd. Dahon, and I don't use the strap. I just reach inside and lift it by the back of the saddle. I can't roll the bike while inside the cover. I found it somewhere on sale....

I don't think you could have easily switched to a hub in a Speed 7 frame. And 7 gears are plenty if they're spaced right. I'm a big hub fan myself, and would recommend getting one with your next bike...
