I don't think there is an element of sympathy involved for most people. Possibly a desire to ride a bike made of sustainable materials, which I think is misguided. But it might be marginally better...

Most people that use bamboo do it because the investment is much lower than a metal frame. Calfee got into it so that people that had bamboo and not much equipment could make bike frames.
