I have been doing that with transitions lenses. They have sufficed as sunglasses. The ones I had years ago stayed too dark too long. These have been fine.

I owned some Rudy Project glasses with inserts in the distant past and they worked out well. It was nice that you could replace the inserts. I had different colored lenses for different conditions....
