My son is left handed and also has this problem. If you say him "Turn right (or left) now, quick" he often mistakes sides. Doesn't happen if he has a moment to think, though.

I'd try unscrewing the cup as much as possible by hand and see if the balls can come out (this could work if they are loose, not if in a retainer), then screwing the cup back as far as it will go, so...

Newer ones have a press fit ring instead of the nut IIRC, as said above you can't...

On some MTBs the FD cable coming from the TT/ST...

On some MTBs the FD cable coming from the TT/ST went through a pulley to reverse its travel to work with a bottom pull FD. That looks like the mounting place for that pulley.
