I had a similar problem on my trike with the shifters. Water got into the cables and pooled at a low point. I could go about a mile and then couldn't shift. Put on new cables and casings to resolve.

I had a TKR in October, 2008. After rehab I have no issues. it feels like the real thing except it doesn't hurt. I rode 5,921 miles this year on 3 different recumbents and expect to do more next year...
