36/24 should be fine for a young stringbean. I did SOTR on a 40/30 granny and I am neither young nor a stringbean. The problem I always have, when riding in Va., is spinning out on the top end.

I have wrapped the bars and changed the saddle. And I found the proper binder bolt but haven't yet installed it. I put the Campy pedals on it, for the time being, though they are not my favorites....
