Less likely to work. The number of 10sp rear derailleurs that will work with 8sp shifting is limited and most won't. Even the few that will won't work as well due to the narrower cage vs the wider...

Any SIS 7-9sp non-Dura Ace rear der will work. an...

Any SIS 7-9sp non-Dura Ace rear der will work. an 8sp der would work the best but any of them will work fine. MTN or road doesn't matter.
