I have one Eddy Merckx (profetional from early 80's) when it got to me had just the same setup (from store) I beleive.
Stronglight crank, wolber brakes and Symplex shifters and derailleurs.

I have tryed some eva foam mat too (double layer) and also combined it with some softer sponge. It was Ok but way to hot and sweaty for Protugal...
