As otherís have pointed out BSA and SA hubs function differently, and you should have a BSA shifter. The shifter shown in the pics, appears likely to be designed for the hub, but I could be wrong

I have a 52 sports with a BE serial number. 56 sounds about right for a DL serial. The front hub should be dated also.

There is a website to match serial numbers to the year.

I bought a couple of bikes from Mike in the fall. Both came with very strong AW hubs, smooth with strong pawl springs.

I wouldnít hesitate to spend money with Mike.

I have a black 53 Hercules with Chrome fenders, like the one you have. Mine however has the tourist head badge. Other wise the chain guard and decals seem to be the same.
