Two likely stupid questions...

One, on Neco and some Shimano hubs, they have this annoying band on the drive side. I assume it is to hold the bearing cartridge or something. But not much space for the crank tapers.

Nothing I can speak with any certainty about, but wasn’t the Dura Ace 8 speed the funky one that didn’t play nice with anything else, or was that the 9 speed 7700 series? Or both?
