my favorite gearing on road bikes is 42-12. its a nice solid gearing imo. i can hit 30+ on the flats and still crank up hills. i want my track bike to be about the same. the track bike is a 48-16....

imo the trek 1000 is the way to go. the new ones have carbon forks and a carbon seat post. i have an 04 without the carbon and love it. not as smooth as my Lemond but still fun to ride.
