I recently purchased a new bike - mid 80's Peugeot (501 frame)

I'm new to actually owning my own road bike so I'm unfamiliar with what parts to get when upgrading...

Could someone point me in the right direction as far as what I can and can't get for wheels/tires? I was told I may need spacers?

A little overwhelmed but enthusiastic about my new hobby/activity.
