I'd say that's a good start. Also make sure all bits are torqued to spec - pedals (with grease), chainring bolts (with Teflon tape), crank bolts, etc. Does the creaking occur both when seated and standing? Many sounds can perform a ventriloquist act with the BB/shell. Seat clamp and binder bolts are also worth checking.

Glad to hear that the chain went on vacation on the down-side of the hill rather than up-side. And without drama!
