At $400 you are better off looking at CL for a nice used crosser. only reason I got new was because the lbs had a 2012 trek x01 for $600. Unless you prefer single speed i would not go with that.You may also find one at a yard sale. Just looked at ebay and there are several in the $300- $800 range. If you could jump up to the $700 range you could get a right nice cross bike. Only trouble with ebay is you can't get a test ride in.
