It is my experience that the SPD side is facing in a random direction on newer pedals that still have tight seals and lots of grease in the bearings.

And once the seals have loosened up and most of the grease has disappeared, the SPD side usually faces aft. I am not familiar with your specific pedal, but my other SPD/platform pedals work that way.
